Estudiantes and San Lorenzo, dead even on paper, meet at the Hirschi with urgent need for points

With identical 14 points and six losses apiece, Pincha and Ciclon are after a win in La Plata that would pull them away from the bottom, in a matchup the model projects as tight and low scoring.

Estudiantes and San Lorenzo, dead even on paper, meet at the Hirschi with urgent need for points

Level on points, level at the bottom of the table and sharing the same record of six losses so far this season: that's how Estudiantes de La Plata and San Lorenzo arrive at a matchup that's less about prestige than plain necessity. They face off at Jorge Luis Hirschi Stadium in the Argentina Primera Division, and neither side can afford to give away points in the lower-middle stretch of the standings.

The home side comes in with 14 points from 12 games played (4 wins, 2 draws and 6 losses, with 15 goals scored and 13 allowed), sitting ninth in Group A. Over its last five matches, Estudiantes has picked up one win, two draws and two losses, an uneven run that has kept it well off the top of the standings. At home, though, Alexander Medina's side looks like a different team this 2026 season: in eight matches as host it's averaging 1.38 goals scored and just 0.5 allowed, with clean sheets in half of those games and a tendency to score between the 76th and 90th minutes. Tiago Palacios, Adolfo Gaich and Alexis Castro share the team lead in goals over that stretch, with three apiece.

San Lorenzo, coached by Ruben Insua, shares the same 14 points and the identical win-draw-loss record, though with a far worse goal difference: 5 goals scored and 11 allowed on the season. Over its last five matches it picked up two wins, one draw and two losses. On the road in 2026, the Azulgrana have been a team of tight margins: 0.5 goals scored per game, 0.38 allowed and clean sheets in 63% of those matches, with their most common scoring window falling between the 61st and 75th minutes. Alexis Cuello, with four goals, is the most prominent name in that sample, followed by Rodrigo Auzmendi.

An even head-to-head record, with the edge in goals to the visitors

The history between the two clubs doesn't clearly tip the scales either. In eight meetings, Estudiantes has never beaten San Lorenzo: there have been six draws and two wins for the visitors, with an aggregate score of 4 goals for the home side and 6 for San Lorenzo.

Probable lineups

For Estudiantes, the projected lineup (low reliability based on recent matches) would have Fernando Muslera in goal, a back line of Santiago Nunez, Leandro Gonzalez Pirez, Gaston Benedetti and Eros Mancuso, a midfield of Joaquin Tobio Burgos, Ezequiel Piovi, Alexis Castro, Baltasar Rodriguez and Fabricio Perez, with Adolfo Gaich leading the attack.

San Lorenzo, with a probable XI rated medium reliability, would likely field Jose Devecchi in goal; Danilo Arboleda, Emiliano Amor, Guzman Corujo and Ezequiel Herrera across the back; Nicolas Tripichio, Teo Rodriguez Pagano and Ignacio Perruzzi in midfield; and an attacking trio of Alexis Cuello, Rodrigo Auzmendi and Facundo Farias.

What the numbers say

Our model gives Estudiantes a certain edge for playing at home, though not enough to make it a clear favorite:

ResultProbability
Estudiantes win47%
Draw36%
San Lorenzo win17%

Expected goals back up that reading: 1.1 for Estudiantes against 0.55 for San Lorenzo, a combined 1.64 that doesn't point to a high scoring affair. In fact, the model gives just a 19% chance of the match finishing with more than 2.5 total goals, and a 31% chance of both teams scoring. These are our own projections, not betting odds, but the message is clear: expect a tight match, with the home side somewhat better positioned but without a lopsided edge.

With both teams needing points to pull away from the lower reaches of the table, the match at the Hirschi figures to be more about caution than an offensive showcase. The ball, as always, will have the final say.
