Evander leads FC Cincinnati to a commanding 2-0 win at D.C. United

With a goal and an assist from Evander, FC Cincinnati came away with a 2-0 win at Audi Field despite D.C. United controlling possession yet again failing to finish.

Evander leads FC Cincinnati to a commanding 2-0 win at D.C. United

Evander showed up from outside the box in the 34th minute, curling a shot into the top left corner to hand FC Cincinnati a lead it would never relinquish. Pat Noonan's side went on to win 2-0 at Audi Field in an MLS matchup that D.C. United dominated in terms of the ball but not on the scoreboard.

The home side came out with more possession and more half-chances: Brandon Servania had already tested the Cincinnati defense just 3 minutes in, and between the 38th and 41st minutes Servania himself had up to three attempts, one of them clipping the crossbar. But all that pressure never translated into a goal. Cincinnati, far more clinical, struck first through Evander, assisted by Pavel Bucha, then doubled the lead right at the start of the second half: in the 51st minute, Tom Barlow finished with his right foot from the center of the box off a counterattack, again set up by Evander. Two strikes, two goals, and a match that got away from D.C. United despite its edge in possession.

How the scoring unfolded

Before the opening goal, both sides flashed warning signs: Bryan Ramirez and Evander himself tested the home defense early on, while Kevin Denkey had a chance of his own near the six yard box. D.C. United answered with a header from Jackson Hopkins that ended up in the goalkeeper's hands, and yellow cards started to go around: Obinna Nwobodo for a dangerous play and, shortly after, Tai Baribo also picked one up. Hopkins had to leave the field injured in the 34th minute, the same minute the visitors opened the scoring, forcing an early substitution with Nikola Markovic coming on. The second half had barely started when Cincinnati made it 2-0 just six minutes in, an early statement that left the home side chasing the game the rest of the way.

The numbers sum up the game well: D.C. United had more of the ball, more shots and more corners, but lacked precision, only 2 of its 13 attempts were on target. Cincinnati, with far fewer chances, made them count in the final third. That gap also shows up in the match's estimated xG, calculated from where each shot was taken: 0.638 for the home side against 0.986 for the visitors, a sign that Cincinnati's chances, though fewer, carried more danger.

The pre-match projections had pointed to a fairly even contest, giving D.C. United a 32% chance of winning, 24% for a draw and 44% for FC Cincinnati, with expected goals of 1.69 for the home side and 2.01 for the visitors, for a total of 3.70. The final result lined up with the edge those numbers gave the visiting side, though without the offensive production from D.C. United that the projections had anticipated.

What the result means

In the Eastern Conference, this result leaves the two sides nine points apart: FC Cincinnati sits eighth with 42 points from 31 matches played, while D.C. United is 13th with 33 points from the same number of games. Cincinnati kept up its usual efficiency: few clear chances, but it converted the ones it got. For D.C. United, the game leaves the same underlying feeling that has followed much of its season: creating chances without finishing them, while the opponent gets the job done with the bare minimum.
