FC Dallas Survives Late Scare, Beats Portland Timbers 2-1 on Stoppage-Time Nerves

Toyota Stadium delivered a nerve-wracking finish on Saturday: FC Dallas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the closing minutes and then had to hang on for dear life to close out a 2-1 win over Portland Timbers, in an MLS match that had a bit of everything, including eight minutes of second-half stoppage time.

The first half was choppy, with plenty of fouls (13 for FC Dallas against just 4 for Portland) and few clear-cut chances. Cole Bassett and Kristoffer Velde tried their luck for the visitors without success, while Bernard Kamungo gave the home fans a scare on his side of the field. But just before the break, in the 44th minute, the deadlock broke: Logan Farrington curled in a shot from the right, assisted by Shaq Moore, to make it 1-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Portland took more control of the ball (finishing with 60.7 percent possession) and created danger through Antony and Ariel Lassiter, who had come on in the 55th minute for Joao Ortiz. Logan Farrington rattled the post with a shot in the 73rd minute, and shortly after, with Petar Musa now on the field, FC Dallas found the second goal that appeared to seal the match: in the 86th minute, Joaquín Valiente finished with his left foot from the center of the box, assisted by Musa himself, to make it 2-0.

The match looked all but decided, but stoppage time had other plans. With eight extra minutes signaled by the fourth official, Portland Timbers pushed forward and found their reward in the 92nd minute: Ariel Lassiter, assisted by Gage Guerra, slotted a low shot inside the left post to make it 2-1. The final minutes turned into a Timbers siege in search of the equalizer, with shots from Antony and Lassiter himself, but FC Dallas held on to take all three points.

What the Numbers Say

The stats reflect a match of contrasts: Portland dominated possession and produced more shot volume, but FC Dallas was more clinical when it mattered.

According to our estimate of xG generated in the match, calculated after the fact based on shot locations, Portland Timbers racked up 1.691 expected goals against 1.343 for FC Dallas. That figure backs up what the shot count showed: the visitors created more offensive volume, but the home side was sharper when it counted.

Lassiter's stoppage-time goal wasn't enough to avoid defeat, but it made clear that Portland refused to give up until the final whistle.
