Fermín López has scored in four straight matchdays, matching Bellingham's goals-per-minute rate

Mestalla again, and Fermín López finding the back of the net again. The Ronda native was decisive once more in Valencia: a goal, Man of the Match honors, and two assists thrown in for good measure. With that performance, Fermín now has four goals in LaLiga's first four matchdays, a start that puts him on par with another name that keeps coming up these days: Jude Bellingham, who has two goals since the season kicked off.

Both players enter this season looking for a bit of redemption. Bellingham is coming off a year that fell short of what's expected of him, and Fermín is still carrying the disappointment of missing the Club World Cup to injury right when he was at his hottest. Watching both of them score and decide matches again carries that whiff of a statement being made.

What's interesting is what turns up once you actually sit down with the numbers. Counting from the start of the 2024/25 season through today, Fermín and Bellingham have scored the exact same number of goals for their respective clubs: 25 apiece. One wearing Barcelona's shirt, the other wearing Real Madrid's.

Break it down year by year, though, and the split looks different. In 2024/25, with Hansi Flick already in charge at Barça and the club putting together a strong season, Fermín finished with 8 goals, while Bellingham reached 14 (15 if you count the one he scored at the Club World Cup). The previous season, the script flipped: the Barcelona man hit 13 goals while the Englishman managed just 8. There's another curious coincidence too: each player's highest scoring league season came in his debut year in the top flight, 19 goals for Bellingham, enough to earn him the league's MVP award, and 8 for Fermín, the tally that won him a permanent spot in the first team squad.

Who produces more per minute

This is where the scale tips in Fermín's favor. Since debuting for Barcelona's first team, the midfielder has racked up 36 goals and 30 assists in 7,274 minutes, which works out to a direct goal contribution every 110 minutes. Bellingham, with 11,490 minutes defending Real Madrid's crest, has 48 goals and 36 assists (84 contributions), a rate of one every 137 minutes.

Their paths to this point look nothing alike. Bellingham arrived in Madrid as one of the transfer market's biggest bets, with a fee north of 100 million euros, and answered immediately with a debut season that placed him among the best players in the world. Fermín, meanwhile, earned his spot from the bottom up: a season on loan at Linares, a standout goal in a preseason friendly against Madrid itself that turned heads, and the trust of Xavi Hernández, who gave him minutes he made the most of.

That path nearly got cut short on two separate occasions. The first came right before his breakout as a first team player. The second came in the summer of 2025, when the club's financial troubles put his name on the table as a possible sale, with Chelsea the most interested party. Both Flick and Fermín himself refused to let that happen.

Now the German coach faces another dilemma: who takes the No. 10 role in the big matches, Fermín or Dani Olmo. With Pedri and a likely midfield pairing already settled, the Andalusian keeps building his case with goals and match winning decisions, but Olmo isn't standing still either. He already showed his chemistry with Pedri at the World Cup, and in Valencia, with barely 25 minutes on the field, he chipped in two assists to remind Flick that he wants his spot too.
