Flamengo pays $15 million for Joaquín Freitas, the young star who jumped from the lower divisions to River

Fifteen million dollars for 80% of the rights to a 19-year-old kid who, just a year ago, was playing for Acassuso in the third tier of Argentine soccer. That's how fast the game moves when a talent like Joaquín Freitas comes along, and that's how bold Flamengo's bet was to pull him away from River Plate.

The Rio club needed a replacement for Gonzalo Plata, who was transferred to Dynamo Moscow, and found in Freitas exactly the profile it was looking for: a young forward with upside and the ambition to keep developing far from home. The player's own willingness ended up tipping the scale.

From the lower divisions to the Monumental in record time

Freitas was born 19 years ago in San Fernando, in the northern suburbs of Greater Buenos Aires, and his story reads like an unlikely script. He made his official debut at 16 with Acassuso, in the tough, physical world of Argentina's lower divisions, until Javier Pinola, then an assistant coach under Martín Demichelis, recommended him to River's youth academy. The initial deal was for just $50,000 for 75% of his rights; River later bought the rest, and Acassuso kept a percentage of any future sale, capped at one million dollars, which it will now collect.

In the reserves, under Marcelo Escudero, Freitas broke out: 11 goals and 3 assists in 34 games. That form opened the door to River's first team when Marcelo Gallardo called him up in late 2025, following Sebastián Driussi's injury. By then he was no longer a stranger to anyone at the club.

Since then, mostly under Eduardo Coudet, Freitas has logged 30 appearances, one goal (against Banfield) and two assists, playing 1,502 minutes. During that stretch came the biggest reward yet: a call-up from Lionel Scaloni to the Argentina national team for the FIFA date ahead of the World Cup, where he debuted against Honduras alongside fellow youngsters like Santiago Beltrán and Tomás Aranda.

A second striker playing out wide

Under Coudet, Freitas ended up converted into a right winger, and even tried his hand as a midfielder and wingback, though his natural position is as a second striker, closer to the box and playing with his back to goal. He explained the change without complaint.

Standing 5-foot-9, he isn't a physically imposing player, but his commitment in one-on-one duels and his work rate up and down the field were qualities the Monumental crowd recognized more than once. In his final games wearing River's jersey, he converted a penalty against Independiente Santa Fe in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, something he had already done against San Lorenzo back in May.

River had signed Freitas to a professional contract in late 2025, with a $100 million release clause, but the club's crowded attacking roster (Driussi, Beltrán, Borré, Correa, Almada) and the lack of immediate playing time helped convince Freitas to make the jump. Now he faces the challenge of making his CONMEBOL Libertadores debut with Flamengo, in a move that's unusual for young Argentine prospects, who typically look to Europe first.
