Joaquín Freitas is off to Flamengo: from his River debut less than a year ago to a $15 million move to Brazil

It hadn't even been a year since that modest debut, 16 minutes against Vélez in a scoreless draw with little to remember, and Joaquín Freitas was already packing his bags for Brazil. That's how fast soccer moves when a club like Flamengo comes calling with a check for $15 million for 80% of his rights.

The news broke Sunday afternoon, just hours before River, already without their young forward on the bench, came away with a 3-2 road win over Banfield under interim boss Leonardo Ponzio. The exit caught many off guard given how sudden it was, though River officials know all too well that once a Brazilian club with that kind of financial muscle sets its sights on a player, there's little to be done to stop it.

Freitas arrived at River tagged as a rising star. A product of Acassuso's youth system, where he'd already logged first-team minutes back in 2023 despite his young age, he didn't make his River debut until November 15. Marcelo Gallardo gave him his first shot, and later Eduardo "Chacho" Coudet kept him in the lineup, often in a position that wasn't naturally his. In total, he made 30 appearances, scored one goal and added two assists, without winning a single title during his time at the Núñez club.

Before boarding his flight, the 19-year-old forward took a moment to say his goodbyes and reflect on his time at River.

No demands on position at Flamengo

In Brazil, Freitas arrives looking to log minutes rather than push for a fixed spot on the field. He made that clear himself: "Whatever's needed. I'm here to help out. If it can be as a forward, that's where I'll be. If not, as a winger or a midfielder, but always to contribute." A statement that shows that, at 19, he'd rather adapt and earn his place than argue over what position he'll play.

Can you ask too much of a kid who's just getting started? Freitas chose to keep his expectations measured, though he doesn't hide his ambition either: "Adapt as fast as possible, get the minutes I want, which I do expect, and if a title comes along, all the better." Flamengo, with its recent history of international silverware, offers exactly that: the chance to compete for big things at a very young age.
