Fluminense and Independiente Rivadavia Split the Points in a Scoreless Draw at the Maracana in Copa Libertadores Round of 16

Fluminense and Independiente Rivadavia split the points at the Estadio do Maracana following a 0-0 draw that leaves the Copa Libertadores round of 16 tie undecided. The Brazilian side controlled the ball from start to finish, but ran into a well-organized Mendoza defense and the saves of its goalkeeper time and again, in a match that produced more chances than goals.

Dominance Without a Reward

The home side set the terms of possession from the opening whistle, though the first real warning came from the visitors: in the 3rd minute, Maximiliano Salas forced a save down to the goalkeeper's left with a shot from outside the box, and a minute later Ezequiel Bonifacio sailed another attempt well over the bar. Fluminense answered through Guilherme Arana and Guga, who tried shots from distance without finding accuracy, while Ignacio couldn't quite connect on a header from a corner kick in the 11th minute.

The match stayed even for the rest of the first half: Leonard Costa forced a point-blank save in the 28th minute, Leonel Bucca headed wide in the 29th, and Ivan Villalba came close in the 35th following a free kick taken by Matias Fernandez. Fluminense closed out the first half pushing harder through Yeferson Soteldo, Hulk and Martinelli, but none of them could break down the opposing defense, and both sides went into the break scoreless.

In the second half, Fluminense wasted no time turning to the bench, bringing on Agustin Canobbio and Lucho Acosta, and stepped up its attacking presence. Guilherme Arana tried twice in three minutes, in the 48th and 50th, Lucho Acosta also had a go, and Ganso headed a point-blank effort in the 79th minute off a cross from Jefferson Savarino, but all of those shots were dealt with. On the other side, Independiente Rivadavia held firm with Gonzalo Rios and Alex Vigo, both of whom had come on as substitutes, without managing to seriously threaten the home goal. Jefferson Savarino had the clearest chance of the match in the 87th minute, but his shot was comfortably handled by the visiting goalkeeper. The score never budged and the match ended level.

The Numbers Behind the Match

The stats back up the story of a Fluminense side that dominated possession without converting it into goals, and an Independiente Rivadavia team that sat back and still managed to create danger in stretches.

StatFluminenseIndependiente Rivadavia
Possession (%)73.626.4
Shots1611

That overwhelming control of the ball, 667 passes to 233, didn't translate into more shots on target: both sides finished level with three shots on frame apiece. According to our own estimate of xG generated in the match, Fluminense accumulated 1.346 expected goals compared to 0.864 for Independiente Rivadavia, a gap that reflects the home side's greater attacking volume, though not enough to show up on the scoreboard.

What the Preview Said and What Actually Happened

Before kickoff, our projection gave the visitors a 48% chance of winning, against 29% for Fluminense and 23% for a draw, with a combined expected goals total of 3.84, split 1.67 for the home side and 2.17 for the visitors. What unfolded on the field largely contradicted that forecast: far from a goal-fest, the match finished scoreless, and it was Fluminense, not Independiente Rivadavia, who carried the greater offensive weight, even if it never showed up on the board.

What the Result Leaves Behind

The scoreless draw at the Maracana leaves this round of 16 tie in the Copa Libertadores wide open, with today's result alone not determining what comes next for either side. Fluminense had control and kept pressing, but lacked the finishing touch or the luck at the decisive moment; Independiente Rivadavia, with far less of the ball, looked solid defensively and capable of generating occasional danger going forward. Neither team could find an edge on the scoreboard, and the tie now hinges on what happens in the next leg.
