Fluminense overpowers Platense at the Maracana, takes commanding lead in Copa Libertadores quarterfinals

Nonato and Hulk struck within ten minutes as the home side controlled the match despite a persistent visiting effort that never found the net.

Fluminense overpowers Platense at the Maracana, takes commanding lead in Copa Libertadores quarterfinals

In ten minutes, between the 20th and 30th, Fluminense put the game away. First Nonato struck from outside the box after a counterattack set up by Hulk, then Hulk himself finished with his left foot inside the area after a through ball from Ganso. 2-0 at the Maracana, and the rest of the 90 minutes belonged to Platense, pushing forward without reward, in a quarterfinal clash of the Copa Libertadores.

The first goal came from a quick break: Hulk carried the ball forward and found Nonato, who made no mistake from outside the area. Ten minutes later came the second, built the same way, with vertical speed: Ganso slipped a pass between the lines and Hulk finished low, just inside the post, for the 2-0. Before those two plays, Platense had given a warning with two shots from Nicolas Retamar from outside the box, both off target, and had no time left to change the story before halftime.

The second half turned into a one-sided visiting siege that never produced a goal. Platense threw everyone forward, with Bruno Sepulveda, Guido Mainero, Juan Gauto and Ignacio Vazquez testing the goal from inside and outside the area, plus a string of corner kicks that led to nothing concrete. Fluminense, bringing on German Cano, Jefferson Savarino, Lucho Acosta and Hercules, focused on managing the lead and looking for a third goal on the counter, like Cano's late shot that was stopped right under the crossbar.

What the numbers say

The stats tell a curious story: Fluminense won with less possession than one might expect for such a dominant scoreline and far fewer shots, but was clinical with what little it created.

With just four shots, Fluminense put three on target and converted two. Platense, meanwhile, fired thirteen shots and only one was between the posts. That gap in efficiency also shows up in the estimated xG for the match, which we calculate from the location of each shot: 1.006 for Fluminense against 0.785 for Platense, a far more even split than the final score suggests, confirming that the visitors created danger, just without the finishing touch.

Our pre-match projection gave Fluminense a 57% chance of winning, against 30% for a draw and 13% for a Platense victory, with expected goals of 1.46 for the home side and 0.58 for the visitors. The final scoreline ended up more emphatic than that projection anticipated, though the direction, a Fluminense win, matched expectations.

The road to the quarterfinals

Both sides reached this stage through round-of-16 ties decided by penalties or the slimmest of margins: Fluminense eliminated Independiente Rivadavia after a 0-0 draw at home and a 1-1 away, while Platense got past Coquimbo Unido with a 1-1 at home and a 0-0 on the road. Neither side, then, arrived carrying a recent blowout win, which makes Fluminense's ruthlessness in just ten minutes tonight all the more striking.

With this result, Fluminense has all but secured its quarterfinal series with a two-goal cushion, while Platense will need to turn the tie around if this stage is decided over two legs. Beyond the scoreline, though, the match left a clear picture: efficiency up front against persistence without precision.
