River fails to close deal for Argentinos center back Francisco Álvarez

River set out to put out a fire in defense and ended up running into a wall instead. The name they had targeted was Francisco Álvarez, the Argentinos Juniors center back, but the deal fell apart almost as quickly as it had come together.

Everything sped up after the win over Banfield, a match that, despite the result, once again exposed cracks in the back line. Leonardo Ponzio's debut as head coach had been promising at the Florencio Sola against Banfield, but the defensive concerns remained on the table, and the front office decided to move for a center back.

Gustavo Yarroch and Juan Patricio Balbi confirmed the story on Buen Día ESPN: River had stepped on the gas in the final hours of the transfer window to try to land Álvarez. The problem is that the negotiation didn't last long, not long at all.

Malaspina's version of events

Argentinos president Cristian Malaspina took it upon himself to publicly explain why no agreement was reached. According to him, the offer that came in from Núñez created a serious complication, not because of the amount itself, but because of how it was structured to be paid.

The club president made clear that Argentinos "stood its ground" and called River's proposal unworkable given the payment terms on offer. He also revealed that he had a direct conversation with Stéfano Di Carlo, River's president, to flag the friction that offer had caused internally with the player himself.

"They understood that they were creating a big problem for us with the player over something that was impossible to accept," Malaspina added, making clear that the talks between the two clubs were candid and that, in the end, both sides agreed there was no room to get the deal done.

Who is Francisco Álvarez

Álvarez is 26 years old and joined Argentinos in January 2024. Before landing in La Paternal, he had spells at Barracas Central and Patronato, all while his rights belonged to Talleres de Córdoba, the club that bought him in 2022.

He's right footed, stands 5 foot 11, and plays naturally as a first center back, though he can also fill in at right back when needed. Born in Rawson, he came up through the youth ranks at San Martín de San Juan, the team he debuted for in the top division back in 2018.

Had the move gone through, Álvarez would have competed on equal footing for a starting spot with Lucas Martínez Quarta, who is currently under scrutiny for his recent dip in form and whose future remains uncertain as the transfer window winds down.
