River set to sign Francisco Álvarez from Argentinos Juniors to shore up defense
The 26 year old center back is expected to provide answers for a backline that keeps showing cracks, with the transfer window set to close soon.
River won, sure. But the match against Banfield left a bittersweet feeling: the defense struggled more than it should have, setting off alarm bells right as the transfer window is about to shut. With the win at the Florencio Sola stadium as the first bit of good news of the new era, the front office in Nunez is already thinking about its next move: a center back who can bring some relief to a shaky back line.
Leo Ponzio's debut as head coach could not have gone better in terms of the result against Banfield, but the way the team performed defensively showed cracks that did not go unnoticed. And at River, they know there is no room to relax: the transfer window closes on September 2 at 6:00 p.m. Argentina time, and there is still one signing left to sort out.
The first option that Eduardo Coudet had considered aimed higher: the coach had asked for names like Facundo Medina or Gustavo Gómez to reinforce that area. Neither deal could move forward for a simple reason: the numbers did not add up. With that, the club redirected its search toward a more affordable alternative, and above all, one that could be resolved faster before the window shuts.
That is where the name that started gaining traction in the last few hours came in: Francisco Álvarez, a defender from Argentinos Juniors. Journalist Gustavo Yarroch, on Buen Dia ESPN, confirmed that River is close to closing a new signing, though he chose not to reveal the name on air. The version circulating around the club points directly to Álvarez as the chosen one.
Who is Francisco Álvarez
Álvarez is 26 years old and has played for Argentinos Juniors since January 2024. He is from Rawson, came up through the youth ranks at San Martín de San Juan (the club where he made his first team debut in 2018), and in 2022 was bought by Talleres de Cordoba. Since then he has gone out on loan to Patronato and Barracas Central, always with his rights held by the Cordoba club, before landing at Argentinos.
He is right footed, stands 5 foot 11, and plays primarily as a center back, though he can also slide over to right back if needed. Nothing flashy on the resume, but he fits the profile of a functional player who can add minutes right away without requiring much of an adjustment period.
So what does this mean internally? It directly affects Lucas Martínez Quarta, who has been under fire for his inconsistent form in recent matches. If Álvarez arrives, he will not just add competition within the squad, he will also increase the chances that Martínez Quarta ends up leaving the club before the transfer window closes. River is moving fast, because the clock is already ticking.
