Füllkrug and Dinkçi lead Werder Bremen to a crucial win over Hoffenheim
Werder Bremen beat Hoffenheim 2-0 with second-half goals and climb the Bundesliga table.

Werder Bremen had to wait until the 56th minute to break open a tightly contested match, but once they did, they never let go of the lead: Niclas Füllkrug and Eren Dinkçi scored the goals in a 2-0 win over Hoffenheim that keeps the Weserstadion side in the hunt for a spot near the top of the Bundesliga table.
The first half was back and forth without a payoff. Hoffenheim, with more of the ball and more of a threat in the opening minutes, had chances through Fisnik Asllani and Adam Hlozek, who clipped the crossbar with a shot from outside the box in the 30th minute and tried again with a point-blank header just before the break. Bremen answered through Füllkrug, who gave a warning in the 23rd minute with a shot that drifted just wide. Despite the chances, the score stayed level at halftime.
The goal that broke the deadlock
The second half shifted just past the hour mark. In the 56th minute, Füllkrug struck a left-footed shot from the center of the box that flew straight into the top corner, set up by an assist from Karl Hein. The goal went to a VAR review before being confirmed, but the outcome held: Werder Bremen 1, Hoffenheim 0.
The home side, which up to that point hadn't exactly dominated the chance count, found control of the match through that goal. Hoffenheim tried to respond through Fisnik Asllani and Adam Daghim, who created some danger at times but couldn't trouble Karl Hein in the home goal. Then in the 81st minute came the clincher: Eren Dinkçi, who had come on earlier for an injured Mitchell Weiser in the first half, finished with his right foot from the center of the box into the far corner, off a cross from Marco Grüll, to make it 2-0.
What the numbers say
The possession numbers tell a story the scoreline contradicts: Hoffenheim controlled the ball more and completed far more passes, but it was Bremen that produced more shots and, crucially, more shots on target.
| Stat | Werder Bremen | Hoffenheim |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 41.4 | 58.6 |
| Shots | 18 | 16 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 2 |
| Big chances | 1 | 1 |
| Corners | 8 | 4 |
| Passes | 371 | 527 |
| Fouls committed | 11 | 11 |
According to our own post-match xG estimate based on shot location, Werder Bremen generated 1.44 expected goals against Hoffenheim's 1.35, a razor-thin margin that reflects how even the chance quality was, even if finishing ultimately tipped the balance toward the home side.
Our preview published ahead of the match gave Werder Bremen a 38% chance of winning, with a 25% chance of a draw and 37% for Hoffenheim, with combined expected goals of 3.44. The final score ended up tighter than that projection suggested, though still within range for a match that was even in terms of chance creation.
What the result means
With this win, Werder Bremen move to 15 points from eight matches played, with a record of four wins, three draws and one loss, putting them just six points behind Hoffenheim in the standings. The visitors, meanwhile, sit on nine points with three wins, no draws and five losses so far this season, and continue to struggle for consistency on the road.
The match also had a bitter note for Hoffenheim, with Mitchell Weiser forced off injured in Bremen already in the first half, though he was replaced without further trouble by Dinkçi, who would go on to score the second goal. On the disciplinary side, Marco Friedl, Arthur and Youri Regeer picked up yellow cards late on, as the match turned physical in the closing stretch, by which point the result was already all but decided.
