Gabriel Jesus Completes Move to Barcelona from Arsenal
The Brazilian forward becomes Hansi Flick's sixth signing of the season, arriving to fill the gaps left by Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.
Nobody had this one on their radar a week ago, but that's how the transfer market works: when one door closes, another swings open just as fast. The closed door belonged to Julian Alvarez, whom Atletico Madrid refused to sell despite Barcelona's persistent interest. The one that opened, almost as an immediate response, belonged to Gabriel Jesus.
The Brazilian forward landed in Barcelona this past Monday to undergo the usual medical exam, typically the final step before putting pen to paper. And that's exactly what happened: the signing was made official this Tuesday, with Gabriel Jesus now officially a Barcelona player arriving from Arsenal.
If you're looking for why Hansi Flick pushed for this move, you don't have to look far. Just recall what Pep Guardiola said back in 2017, when the Brazilian was still wearing Manchester City colors. The Catalan coach didn't hold back, describing him as unlike any player he'd ever managed.
Gabriel Jesus is the best in the world at high pressing. He can play five minutes and he'll play the best five minutes of his life. He plays 90 minutes and he'll give everything.Pep Guardiola
Guardiola went even further, calling him "the best forward-defender" he'd ever had at his disposal across all three attacking positions. Nearly a decade later, that description seems to sum up exactly what Barcelona is after right now: a player who can roam the entire front line and, above all, press relentlessly.
Deco's take
The club's sporting director, Deco, laid out the reasoning behind the move in comments to Diario SPORT. He spoke of a player with clear technical qualities and a reading of the game that fits Flick's blueprint.
He's a very good technical player. He can go both ways with either foot, he carries the ball well and reacts very quickly in tight spaces. Gabriel Jesus isn't a static center forward, he can show up anywhere inside the box and also drift out wide. And that's exactly what Hansi wants: constant interchanging of positions.Deco
Deco also stressed something Barcelona particularly values: defensive commitment. "He's a team player and he works incredibly hard on the first press. When he has to press, he really commits to it," he explained. This isn't the first time the club has tracked the Brazilian closely. Deco himself recalled having watched him live twice while he was still at City, before his move to Arsenal, and said the internal scouting reports were always favorable.
Gabriel Jesus arrives to help fill the void left by the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, becoming the sixth first team signing of this transfer window, joining Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Rodri, Joao Cancelo and Dominik Livakovic, who had already arrived. A squad that keeps taking shape under Flick's watch, now with a forward who promises to roam across the entire front line and, above all, chase down the ball like few others can.
