Galatasaray Comes Back Twice to Thrash Lille 2-4 in Champions League Thriller
The Turkish side overcame two deficits and cashed in on an own goal to win a seven-goal thriller at the Decathlon Arena.

Yunus Akgun barely needed a minute to send a shiver through the Decathlon Arena, curling a left-footed effort from the center of the box before the crowd had even settled into their seats. The match finished 2-4 in favor of the Turkish side, but the result was built on twists and turns from start to finish, in a Champions League clash packed with goals.
Lille answered quickly. In the 6th minute, Soriba Diaoune leveled things with a left-footed strike from the left side of the box, finishing off a through ball from Alexsandro. The home side then took control of the game, and in the 38th minute Diaoune struck again, this time with his right foot from the center of the area, curling a shot into the top corner off an assist from Hakon Haraldsson. The 2-1 scoreline looked set to carry the French side into halftime in front, but Galatasaray had other plans. In the 43rd minute, Aleksey Batrakov headed home a Roland Sallai cross from close range, and the two sides went into the break level at 2-2, after a first half that never let up.
There was more drama along the way: in the 26th minute, VAR reviewed a possible penalty for Galatasaray and ultimately waved it off.
The Second Half Belonged to Galatasaray
The second half opened with a brutal blow for Lille. In the 51st minute, an own goal from Berke Ozer made it 2-3 and handed the lead to the Turkish side right when the match had seemed to be up for grabs again. The killer blow came in the 60th minute: Victor Osimhen finished with his right foot from the center of the box after a counterattack led by Baris Alper Yilmaz, sealing the final 2-4.
From there, the match turned into a string of substitutions and Lille attempts to cut the deficit, with shots from Maurits Kjaergaard, Gaetan Perrin and Hakon Haraldsson in the closing stretch, but the scoreboard didn't move again.
The Numbers Behind the Match
Lille had more of the ball and more chances, but Galatasaray was more clinical in the moments that mattered.
| Stat | Lille | Galatasaray |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 55.9 | 44.1 |
| Shots | 15 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 4 |
| Big chances | 2 | 3 |

| Fouls committed | 9 | 10 |
According to our own xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, Galatasaray generated 2.076 expected goals against Lille's 1.588, a gap that backs up the final score even if it doesn't fully explain a result with so many swings.
Our pre-match preview gave Lille a 44% chance of winning, with 28% for a draw and 28% for an away win, with combined expected goals of 2.73. What played out on the field blew well past that projection in terms of total goals, and the result ended up defying the forecast entirely: the side favored on paper ended up losing by two goals.
What It Means in the Standings
The result leaves both teams in tricky spots in the group. Lille remains without points after three matches played, with a goal difference of -6, while Galatasaray has 3 points through the same number of appearances, with a goal difference of -3. Just 3 points separate the two sides in a standings table where there's still plenty of tournament left to play.
For Lille, now with three defeats in the competition so far, the match underscores their struggles to close out games they start well: they twice took the lead and it still wasn't enough. Galatasaray, on the other hand, walked away with all three points despite falling behind twice, a sign of their ability to respond in the key moments of the match.
