Genoa Strikes Twice in 14 Minutes, Holds On to Beat Fiorentina 2-1

Early goals from Osmajic and Messias were enough for Genoa to withstand Fiorentina's possession dominance and take all three points at Luigi Ferraris.

Genoa Strikes Twice in 14 Minutes, Holds On to Beat Fiorentina 2-1

Fourteen minutes. That's all it took for Genoa to build a two-goal cushion against an opponent that, on paper, came in as the favorite. The match finished 2-1 in Genoa's favor at the Luigi Ferraris, but the real story was written almost entirely in the first quarter of an hour, while Fiorentina was still trying to figure out what had hit them.

Genoa came out with a clear plan: attack fast and keep it simple. In the 6th minute, Milutin Osmajic struck a right-footed shot from the center of the box, through the middle of the goal, off an assist from Mikael Ellertsson, to make it 1-0. Less than eight minutes later, Junior Messias curled a left-footed shot into the top corner after a cross from Osmajic himself, making it 2-0. The home side, who would finish with just 36.7% possession, didn't need the ball to do the damage it was looking for.

Fiorentina Reacts, But Too Late

Down on the scoreboard, Fiorentina took control of possession and started creating chances through Franco Mastantuono, Christ Inao Oulaï and Nicolò Fagioli, though without the finishing touch: several shots sailed wide of the posts or were cleared by Genoa's defense. The visitors ended up with 63.3% possession and 476 passes to Genoa's 274, a huge gap that nonetheless didn't translate into more shots on target (3 to the home side's 4).

The goal that brought Fiorentina back into the match wasn't scored by one of their own players: in the 72nd minute, the ball ended up in Genoa's net off a deflection from Johan Vásquez, making it 2-1. From there, the Ferraris lived through some tense moments, with Cher Ndour smashing a shot off the post in the 83rd minute as Fiorentina pushed forward with substitutes Alieu Njie, Mateo Pellegrino, Dodô and Pote. Genoa, however, weathered more than five minutes of stoppage time and held on for all three points.

According to our xG estimate calculated from the shots taken in the match, Genoa generated 1.645 expected goals to Fiorentina's 0.862, a gap that backs up what was seen on the field: the home side had far less of the ball, but was much more clinical near the opponent's box.

The result runs counter to much of what we projected before kickoff. In our preview, we gave Fiorentina a 40% chance to win, with Genoa at 31% and a draw at 29%, with expected goals of 1.41 for the visitors and 1.24 for the home side. What happened was nearly the opposite: Genoa struck first, struck twice, and held the lead to the final whistle.

The win leaves Genoa with 4 points from 6 matches played in Serie A, in 17th place in the table, with 1 win, 1 draw and 4 losses. Fiorentina, with the same point total but a worse goal difference, sits in 18th, also with 1 win, 1 draw and 4 losses in their 6 outings. The gap between the two sides in the standings is minimal, just goal difference, and this result only narrows that margin further.

For Genoa, coached by Daniele De Rossi, it was an afternoon of efficiency: two sharp blows at the start and a defense that, despite the scare of the own goal and Ndour's shot off the post, didn't crack. For Paolo Vanoli's Fiorentina, the match leaves the feeling of having dominated possession without that being enough to reverse a start that left them chasing the game from the 14th minute on.
