Germán Pezzella parts ways with River by mutual agreement after more than a month on the outs

One Instagram post was enough to set off alarm bells. Minutes later, River confirmed what everyone already saw coming: Germán Pezzella is leaving the club. The front office and the 35-year-old defender agreed to terminate his contract, a logical ending after more than a month in which the center back had been sidelined from the first team.

The figure being reported for the departure is around $2,000,000, which the player would receive. It's no small sum, but it closes out a saga that had been dragging on for weeks with no clear direction at Núñez.

The club's official statement was straightforward: "Club Atlético River Plate and Germán Pezzella have decided by mutual agreement to terminate the contractual relationship." It added a paragraph with more context: "Developed in the Club's youth academy, he won five titles wearing our colors across his two stints and became a world champion, reflecting River's historic contribution to the Argentine National Team." The statement closed by thanking him for "his commitment" and wishing him the best "in his next chapter."

Pezzella is no ordinary name in recent Argentine soccer history. He was part of the national team that won the World Cup in Qatar 2022 and also picked up two Copa América titles with the Albiceleste. At the club level, he won five championships split across his two stints, and several former teammates wasted no time sending him messages of support once the news broke.

The backdrop: the sidelined players

Pezzella's departure doesn't happen in a vacuum. The defender was one of 15 players left off the roster by a front-office decision, after being excluded from Eduardo Coudet's plans. Stefano Di Carlo addressed the situation in a press conference: "To bring players in, you have to let players go. It's very complicated. Many times other approaches have been tried and they don't work with this large a number of players who were set aside for soccer-related reasons."

Di Carlo also noted that, regarding the players who were set aside, the club has been working "on their exits and respecting their wishes," and clarified that financially "we haven't caused any harm to the club."

With this, Pezzella's second stint at River comes to a close. He had signed through the end of 2027, but the deal was cut short. In this most recent stretch he played 50 official matches and scored one goal; combining both spells, the total comes to 119 appearances and six goals wearing the red sash.

So what's next? Pezzella is now a free agent. In Argentina he's only played for River, though his career took him through Europe, with stints at Real Betis in Spain and Fiorentina in Italy. It remains to be seen whether he'll look for a new destination abroad or if some club back home will take a chance on a World Cup champion with his contract situation now resolved.
