Gibraltar holds off Andorra as Nations League clash ends scoreless
Andorra dominated possession and shots, but Gibraltar dug in at home as both sides split the points in Group D1.

Neither Gibraltar nor Andorra found a way to break the deadlock in a 0-0 draw at the Europa Point Stadium, a result that leaves both sides feeling something was missing in the final third. There were corners, there were fouls aplenty (24 from Andorra to Gibraltar's 15) and even a fair share of yellow cards, but the ball never crossed the goal line across 90 minutes plus stoppage time in the UEFA Nations League.
The match had an early scare: in the 7th minute, off a corner, Pau Babot tried a header from point-blank range and Gibraltar's keeper made the save; on the same play, Jordi Alaez followed up with a low shot that was also stopped on the line. It was a sign that Andorra would have more of the ball and more chances, something the final stats would go on to confirm.
Gibraltar hung on as best it could with Tjay De Barr as its main offensive outlet, though he spent most of the afternoon defending: he was the player fouled the most all match. Before halftime, he also picked up a yellow card for dangerous play, the first of a list that kept growing with Eric Izquierdo, Biel Borra, Pau Babot (who would end up with two, though the card count didn't change the flow of the game) and Graeme Torrilla.
Second half brings more attempts than clarity
The second half opened in the same fashion, with Andorra pushing forward and looking for depth through Guillaume Lopez and Aron Rodrigo, while Gibraltar defended with the occasional foray forward. Nicholas Pozo had a shot go wide off a corner in the 54th minute, and Bernardo Lopes tried a header in the 75th that didn't trouble the opposing keeper. On the other side, Guillaume Lopez, Aron Rodrigo and Moises San Nicolas all had efforts from different spots but couldn't find the target with any precision.
The substitutions shook up the game but not the scoreline. Gibraltar rotated pieces with Carlos Richards, Jesse Gomez, Ethan Jolley, Alain Pons and Jaiden Bartolo, while Andorra turned to Ot Remolins, Berto Rosas, Joel Guillen and Alex Martinez. Even in stoppage time, with four minutes added by the fourth official, Jaiden Bartolo tried an angled shot that went wide and closed out the action.
What the numbers say
Andorra's edge in ball control and chances created was clear in the match stats:
| Stat | Gibraltar | Andorra |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 43.7 | 56.3 |
| Shots | 5 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 1 | 4 |
| Corners | 4 | 4 |
| Passes | 333 | 429 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 24 |
An in-house xG estimate based on the match's shots also favors the visitors: 1.094 to Gibraltar's 0.292. Those numbers back up what played out on the field, an Andorra side that created more and better chances but lacked the finishing touch needed to take all three points.
Group standings
The draw hands a point to each side in Group D1. Gibraltar sits on 1 point after its first match, while Andorra also has 1 point but with a game already played and a loss on its record, leaving it with a negative goal difference. Malta, with one match played and a win, tops the table with 3 points, though there is still plenty of the group stage left to draw any firm conclusions.
In the end, it's a point that doesn't change much for either side in the short term, but it does show that Gibraltar knew how to make itself tough to beat at home against a rival that arrived with more attacking arguments and couldn't turn them into goals.
