Gilberto Mora Sparks a Youth Movement Across Liga MX
Xolos' success with its 17-year-old gem has pushed every major Mexican club to carve out first-team room for its top prospects.

There's one number that explains why every Liga MX club is suddenly combing through its youth ranks: 28.5 million dollars. That's the valuation various specialized outlets now place on Gilberto Mora, the 17-year-old gem at Xolos de Tijuana. No director wants to be caught without his own version of Mora, which is exactly why it's worth tracking the other names, all under 20, who are already starting to break into first-team lineups.
The most eye-catching case, even more precocious than Mora himself, belongs to Juan Carlos "Mono" Martínez, just 16 years old and already registered with Querétaro. He arrived from the Galaxy's youth academy and is now the youngest player registered with a first-team roster for the Apertura 2026. He captains and leads the line for Mexico's youth national teams, and he was a key piece in Mexico's title run at the 2025 Concacaf Under-15 Championship, scoring twice in the final against the United States. His debut, fittingly, came against América.
Monterrey, which carries one of the most expensive payrolls in the country, has also opened the door for its academy products. Among them is Sebastián Rodríguez, an 18-year-old midfielder born in Texas but holding Mexican nationality, who joined at the start of 2026 from Houston Dynamo, where he'd become the 17th academy player to sign with the first team. Nico Sánchez's brief stint on the Monterrey bench served exactly that purpose: giving minutes to young players like Carlos Frayde, Omar Gálvez, Allen Iverson and Rodríguez himself.
Chivas Doubles Down on Homegrown Talent
In Guadalajara, two names have fans buzzing. Santiago Sandoval, an 18-year-old forward born in Boca del Río, Veracruz, has come up through Chivas' academy since the under-14 level and already has 28 appearances in the top flight, all under Gabriel Milito. His finest moment came a couple of months ago when he scored twice against Tigres to send Chivas into the Clausura 2026 semifinals.
The other is Hugo Camberos, 19, who has been with the club since he was 12. He debuted in January 2025 and has already logged 30 appearances and 4 goals in 1,192 minutes. His flair and vision have made him one of the standout names on Mexico's Under-20 national team as it heads toward the World Cup and the Olympics.
At América, under Guillermo Almada, the push to trust the academy also seems to be gaining momentum. In the first two matchdays of the Apertura, two 19-year-olds made their debuts: Ícaro Da Conceicao, a Brazilian midfielder who started against Atlante, and Alejandro Cárdenas, a forward from Mérida with more than 30 goals across the youth ranks and five years at the club.
Puebla has another name worth watching in Ángel Leyva, a 6-foot defender developed in Mazatlán with 18 top-flight appearances and a real shot at a starting role under Gerardo Espinoza, as he showed against Cruz Azul.
More eyes are on Mexico's Olympic qualifying squad too: Atlante defender Cristóbal Alfaro, Juárez midfielder Juan Sigala, Chivas goalkeeper Juan Liceaga and Tigres midfielder Henrique Simeone, all 19, round out a generation that promises to give Liga MX plenty to talk about in tournaments to come.
