Guardiola returns to the Etihad alongside City's top brass after financial rules verdict
The former manager sat in the directors' box with Al Mubarak and Soriano for the match against PSG, marking the team's first home game since an independent panel found the club guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules.

Wearing a flat cap and settled into the directors' box, Pep Guardiola was back at the Etihad Stadium. It was no ordinary visit: it marked the first time City had played at home since an independent commission found the club guilty of breaching the Premier League's financial rules, and the opponent on the night happened to be Paris Saint-Germain.
The former manager has spent months away from the day to day running of the club, but he still holds ties to the organization as a global ambassador for the City Football Group. Even so, this return carried special weight: it was the first time Guardiola had set foot in the stadium, which now features a stand bearing his name, since he left the dugout at the end of last season.
He wasn't alone in the box. Sitting alongside him were club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and chief executive Ferran Soriano. Reports indicated the three held conversations throughout that same day, a move many read as City's attempt to project a united front at the most delicate institutional moment the club has faced.
Was it a coincidence that Guardiola chose this particular match to make his reappearance? Hard to say, but the timing could hardly have been more symbolic. The Catalan coach led City for ten years, collecting twenty major trophies before stepping down in the summer. He was replaced by Enzo Maresca, who arrived after spells at Chelsea and Leicester.
The team, for its part, had already responded on the field. After the guilty verdict was announced, City picked up their first win by thrashing Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield, a Premier League result that served, in some sense, as an on-field answer to everything being debated off it.
Guardiola had already made his position clear weeks earlier, when the club first learned of the ruling. He did so through a social media message full of support for the institution:
I want every single Manchester City fan around the world to know that I am here, more than ever. I am, I have always been, and I will always be supporting my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran, the players, the staff, Enzo and you, our one of a kind supporters. I want to make this clear: we will get through this together. I love you all.Pep Guardiola
The club, meanwhile, isn't standing idly by: it has already appealed the independent commission's verdict and says it holds evidence it considers "irrefutable" to support its position throughout this process.
It's worth remembering the weight of what Guardiola left behind in Manchester: six Premier League titles, one Champions League, three FA Cups and five League Cups. That record helps explain why his mere presence in the Etihad's directors' box became news in its own right, regardless of how things played out on the scoreboard against PSG.
