PSG Stuns Manchester City 4-2 at an Etihad That Came Apart in 14 Minutes

Fourteen minutes. That is all it took for Paris Saint-Germain to put Manchester City on the ropes at the Etihad Stadium: 0-2 with the opening quarter hour still playing out, and the match practically broken open before the home side could even find its footing. The final score, 2-4, confirmed one of those nights where everything that could go wrong for City did go wrong, and everything PSG touched turned into a goal.

The script for this Champions League night was written fast. In the 12th minute, Désiré Doué curled a right-footed shot from outside the box that snuck in low by the left post, set up by Fabián Ruiz. Two minutes later, Doué turned provider himself, whipping in a cross for Ousmane Dembélé to head home from point-blank range and make it 0-2. City was still searching for a response when, in the 31st minute, Vitinha finished from the center of the box off a pass from Warren Zaïre-Emery to make it 0-3. Before that third goal, Achraf Hakimi had rattled the left post with a header, a warning sign that PSG could have gone into halftime with an even bigger cushion.

The second half opened with Manchester City pushing for a way back in. Erling Haaland popped up in the 52nd minute to make it 1-3, heading into the top corner off a cross from Iliman Ndiaye, who had just come on. But PSG answered right away: nine minutes later, Maghnes Akliouche, finishing with his left foot off a Dembélé assist, made it 1-4 and snuffed out any hope of a full comeback. Haaland still got his second of the night in the 74th minute, this time with his right foot, low into the corner, assisted by Ayyoub Bouaddi, to make it 2-4, the final score. In the closing stretch, with City pressing for more, Haaland hit the crossbar, and deep into stoppage time Matheus Nunes brought down Nuno Mendes for a penalty that Ferran Torres sent wide of the post.

Numbers that do not quite tell the whole story

The odd thing is that the raw stats do not paint the picture of a rout: Manchester City controlled possession and fired off far more shots than its opponent, but was not sharp when it mattered most.

Manchester City nearly doubled its opponent's shot total and won eleven corners to PSG's two, but the visitors were ruthless in front of goal, converting four of their ten shots on target. By our own retroactive xG estimate based on shot location, City generated 3.74 expected goals to PSG's 2.17, a gap suggesting the home side deserved more than the two goals it managed, though the final result was decided by the visitors' clinical edge at the key moments.

The contrast with our pre-match projection is striking. Beforehand we gave Manchester City a 54% chance of winning, a 25% chance of a draw and just 21% to Paris Saint-Germain, with expected goals of 1.91 for the home side and 1.12 for the visitors. Reality played out in exactly the opposite way: the team given the slimmer odds on paper ended up routing its host with four goals, more than triple what we had projected for its attack.

What it means in the standings

In the tournament table, Paris Saint-Germain moves to 6 points with a perfect record through two matches, while Manchester City sits on 3 points after one win and one loss, with a goal difference of zero. The gap between the two sides at this stage stands at 3 points. It was a night to forget at the Etihad: City kept pushing, created chances and even had one last opening against PSG with the penalty Ferran Torres missed, but none of it was enough to avoid a defeat that stings above all for how it unfolded, with a first half in which the match slipped away in barely half an hour.
