Guilavogui's brace powers Real Salt Lake to 1-3 rout of bottom side Sporting Kansas City

Ten minutes. That's all it took Real Salt Lake to settle half the story of this match at Sporting Park. Morgan Guilavogui opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a point-blank finish, and just three minutes later Sergi Solans made it 0-2 with a strike from the center of the box. Sporting Kansas City, already reeling in the standings, found itself playing catch-up at home, and the final 1-3 confirmed it never managed to even things out.

The hosts cut the deficit early, at least on the scoreboard. Taylor Calheira, finishing off a counterattack built by André Luiz, drilled a shot into the top corner in the 25th minute to make it 1-2 and inject some tension into this MLS clash. But it proved to be a mirage: Real Salt Lake struck again in the second half, when Guilavogui notched his second goal of the night in the 60th minute, once again set up by Noel Caliskan, to seal the final 1-3.

A lead that was never seriously threatened

After Calheira's goal, Kansas City had its moments: a shot from Calvin Harris that crashed off the post in the 66th minute was perhaps the clearest chance to dream of a comeback. There were earlier chances too, like Wyatt Meyer's header that narrowly missed the target in the first half. But Real Salt Lake managed the lead patiently, leaning on the constant service of Juan Manuel Sanabria and the overlapping runs of Caliskan, who had a hand in two of the three visiting goals.

The match also produced a string of yellow cards without any major incident: Luc De Fougerolles, Juan Manuel Sanabria, Calvin Harris, Jacob Bartlett, Zach Booth, Stijn Spierings and Jansen Miller were all booked at various points, a reflection of a game that got tangled up on the flanks with constant fouls in defensive areas.

What the numbers say

Possession was split almost evenly, but controlling the ball didn't translate into danger for the home side. Real Salt Lake was sharper in the final third, nearly doubling Kansas City's shots on target.

In terms of xG calculated after the fact based on shot location, Real Salt Lake generated 1.69 expected goals to Kansas City's 1.22, a gap that confirms the scoreline was no fluke but rather the mark of a team that was more effective when it mattered.

The pre-match numbers had pointed in that direction: our projection gave Real Salt Lake a 46% chance of winning, with Kansas City at 29% and a draw at 25%, with combined expected goals of 3.26 (1.84 for the visitors and 1.42 for the home side). The final result, with four goals on the board, didn't stray far from that script.

What it means in the standings

In the MLS Western Conference, this result lands differently for each club. Real Salt Lake sits at 36 points through 30 matches (10 wins, 6 draws and 14 losses), in 10th place. Sporting Kansas City, meanwhile, remains in last place, with 22 points from 30 matches (6 wins, 4 draws and 20 losses) and a goal difference of -39, the worst in the entire table. The gap between the two clubs now stands at 14 points, and this loss does nothing to help the home side close it.

For Kansas City, Calheira's goal was a flash of life that wasn't enough to turn around a match that had slipped away in the opening thirteen minutes. For Real Salt Lake, the finishing of Guilavogui, who scored twice, and Caliskan's hand in the assists were enough to carry the three points out of Sporting Park.
