Gyokeres strikes the only goal as Sweden downs Romania in Nations League
A lone first-half goal from Viktor Gyokeres gave Sweden a 0-1 win over Romania, who are now rock bottom of Group B4 while the Scandinavians stay on top with 10 points.

In the 12th minute, Sebastian Nanasi smashed a point-blank shot off the left post. The rebound fell to Viktor Gyokeres, who made no mistake this time, firing a right-footed shot from close range into the middle of the goal to make it 0-1. That strike ended up being the only goal of the match at the National Arena, and it was enough for Sweden to walk away with all three points in the UEFA Nations League.
Romania held the ball for longer stretches (52.1 percent possession) and even produced more shots overall, but Sweden was sharper when it mattered. The hosts started brightly, with Nicusor Bancu testing the goal from the left side of the box in the 7th minute, and Darius Olaru following up soon after with a shot that was blocked by the visiting defense. Still, the visitors found the breakthrough before the home side could, and that early blow shaped the rest of the night.
After the goal, Sweden kept pushing forward: Gyokeres tried a header and also had a shot from outside the box, Victor Lindelof went close with a header that flew over the bar, and Alexander Bernhardsson came within inches of the right post. Romania answered through Nicolae Stanciu, who forced a strong save from the Swedish goalkeeper with a low shot from outside the area in the second half, and through Florin Tanase, who also tried his luck from the right side of the box without success.
In the second half, Gheorghe Hagi shuffled his bench looking for a response, bringing on Ianis Hagi, Alexandru Cicaldau and Valentin Mihaila, and the home side grew bolder in attack. Cicaldau forced a big save from inside the box, Dennis Man tried a header that was comfortably collected under the crossbar, and Mihaila narrowly missed after a cross from Andrei Coubis. But the Swedish goal held firm against everything thrown at it. On the other side, Graham Potter rotated his options, sending on Hugo Larsson, Daniel Svensson, Hugo Bolin, Samuel Dahl and Hampus Skoglund, and Sweden still had time to rattle the right post through Svensson deep into stoppage time, a chance that summed up how close they came to doubling the lead.
What the numbers say
The statistics confirm a match that was even in terms of control but lopsided in terms of finishing. Sweden had fewer total shots, but created five big chances compared to none recorded for Romania, a gap that shows up clearly in the estimated expected goals for the match: 3.508 for the visitors against just 0.615 for the hosts.
| Statistic | Romania | Sweden |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 52.1 | 47.9 |
| Shots | 13 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 2 |
| Big chances | - | 5 |
| Corners | 5 | 4 |
| Passes | 528 | 500 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 11 |
Before kickoff, our projection gave Sweden a 76 percent chance of winning, against just 11 percent for Romania and 13 percent for a draw, with expected goals of 3.54 for the visitors and 1.45 for the hosts. The final score was tighter than that forecast, but Sweden's dominance on the field, reflected in the big chances and the match xG, ended up lining up with what was expected before kickoff.
What it means in the standings
In Group B4, Sweden climbed to 10 points through four matches, with three wins and a draw, and remains on top of the group. Romania, meanwhile, finished its fourth match without a single point: four defeats and a goal difference of -10, leaving them bottom of the group. The 10-point gap between the two sides in the standings is a fair reflection of what played out on the field tonight as well.
