Sweden edges Romania 2-1 behind Isak and Gyokeres, tops Nations League Group B4

Goals from Isak and Gyokeres, a VAR disallowed strike for Stroud and Swedish dominance in possession and chances sealed the win over Romania in the Nations League.

Sweden edges Romania 2-1 behind Isak and Gyokeres, tops Nations League Group B4

Isak, Man and Gyokeres took turns filling the Strawberry Arena with goals, and in the end it was Sweden that walked away with all three points in a tight 2-1 win over Romania. The match, part of Group B4 in the UEFA Nations League, had a bit of everything in a frantic opening 45 minutes: three goals, a refereeing controversy and a result that wasn't fully settled until well into the second half, when VAR wiped out a goal from Elliot Stroud.

The hosts opened the scoring early. In the 19th minute, Alexander Isak latched onto a through ball from Yasin Ayari and finished with his right foot from inside the box, curling it into the top left corner to make it 1-0. Romania answered quickly: nine minutes later, Dennis Man converted an assist from Andrei Ratiu, striking left-footed from the center of the box to level the score. The game opened up from there, with both sides creating chances before halftime, until Viktor Gyokeres struck in the 42nd minute to make it 2-1 with a close-range finish off a corner kick, the score that held until the break.

In the second half, Sweden thought it had extended its lead in the 52nd minute when Stroud slotted home a shot from inside the box. But a VAR review chalked off the goal, and the score stayed at 2-1. From there, the match slowed down: both benches made substitutions, yellow cards piled up for rough play (Romania picked up several), and a lengthy seven-minute stoppage time passed without either side finding the back of the net again.

What the numbers say

Sweden controlled possession and was sharper in front of goal. Based on our own estimate calculated from the match's shots, the hosts produced an xG of 1.17 compared to Romania's 0.56, a gap that lines up with what played out on the field: more clear-cut chances for the Swedes, including the only "big chance" recorded in the match.

The fouls tell their own story too: Romania committed 17 against just 6 for Sweden, a sign of a team that had to resort to physical play to slow down the home side's ball movement, especially late on as it chased the equalizer.

What the result means in the standings

With the win, Sweden moved to the top of the group with 3 points from one match, while Romania sits at the bottom with none after its opening fixture. The gap between the two sides in the table stands at 3 points. It's still just matchday one, so the group picture is only beginning to take shape, with Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina sharing the middle of the table after draws in their respective games.

For Sweden, managed by Graham Potter, the win comes with both attacking stars putting their names on the scoresheet, Isak and Gyokeres, each contributing in his own way. For Gheorghe Hagi's Romania, the takeaway is different: the team competed and created its share of danger through the likes of Dennis Man and Ianis Hagi, but it wasn't enough to hold onto the equalizer it had found midway through the first half. The VAR blow in the second half, with Stroud's goal wiped out, will stand as the moment that kept Sweden's lead from growing more comfortable, though in the end it didn't matter: the result had already been decided in that opening 45 minutes.
