With City Engulfed in Scandal, Haaland Just Keeps Scoring Like Nothing Happened

While England picks apart every line of the verdict against Manchester City, there's one player in the Norway camp who doesn't seem to be losing any sleep over it. His name is Erling Haaland, and on Thursday he'll walk out onto the pitch at Cardiff City Stadium with the same look he always has: someone with nothing on his mind but scoring goals.

Wales host Norway in the Nations League, and as usual, all eyes are on the striker. He arrives with a record that's starting to sound almost unreal: 65 goals in 57 appearances for the national team. And if he's proven anything in recent days, it's that the media storm surrounding his club isn't weighing him down one bit.

The backdrop is no small thing. An independent panel published a ruling on Tuesday finding that City set up "fictitious" contracts with commercial partners to inflate revenue, filed "falsified" accounts to hide the club's true financial position, and "significantly" breached both Premier League and UEFA spending limits. The Premier League itself has already said sanctions will be determined at a separate hearing, while the club continues to deny everything and says it will appeal.

Against that noisy backdrop, defender Kristoffer Ajer, Haaland's Norway teammate, played the whole thing down when asked how the striker had looked in training since the ruling came out.

"Ever since I've known him, he brings so much energy and joy to the group. That's the biggest compliment I always give him: he hasn't changed at all since I met him, even though he's now the biggest star on the planet."Kristoffer Ajer

The Brentford defender was even more direct about the Norwegian's mood amid the controversy. "He's been exactly the same the last few days, which doesn't surprise me," he said. If there's anyone used to having the world swirl around him without it ever showing in his performances, it's Haaland.

The numbers back that up. The first reports on the City case broke on Friday, and two days later the striker scored against Portugal in a 2-1 loss. Before that, he'd already bagged a brace against Denmark, extending his record as the Nations League's all-time leading scorer to 22 goals. How much more consistency could you ask for in the middle of an institutional storm like this?

Ajer didn't hold back when asked what he expects from the match against Wales: "For me he's the best player in the world, so I hope he scores a few goals tomorrow too." But he also made clear that inside the Norway locker room, the City situation simply doesn't take up any space.

"I have to admit, honestly, I haven't paid much attention to the City situation. We don't talk about it much here. Obviously there was a statement released yesterday, so it's pretty recent. But we're just footballers, we don't know all the details or everything that's being said in the media. So we really haven't had any big conversation about it where we actually know much."Kristoffer Ajer

In the end, the message coming out of the Norway camp is simple: while others argue over accounts, contracts and sanctions, Haaland just keeps doing the one thing that truly seems to matter to him, which is showing up in front of the opposing goal.
