Harry Kane hopes to sign Bayern Munich renewal next month

Harry Kane has spent two years shattering records in Germany, and now he wants to settle his future once and for all. The English striker confirmed that he expects to sign his renewal with Bayern Munich next month, putting an end to speculation about a possible departure.

His current contract runs out at the end of the season, and that expiration date had put several clubs on alert, with Barcelona among those interested in landing the England captain's services. Still, everything suggests Kane feels at home in Munich, where he has enjoyed a remarkable spell since arriving from Tottenham for 120 million euros ($136.8 million).

The numbers back up that comfort. Last week, Kane broke a 49 year old record by becoming the fastest player to reach 100 Bundesliga goals, a milestone he hit during Bayern's 7-0 rout of Union Berlin. In total, the forward has piled up 152 goals in 154 appearances in Bavarian colors across all competitions, a run that has him among the favorites for the next Ballon d'Or.

Asked about his future while on international duty with England, Kane was clear about how the negotiations are going:

The talks are going well. I've been pretty open and honest about that. We're still in discussions and I think they're moving in the right direction. Both sides have been very calm about it. The striker also made clear that, for now, his commitment to the national team takes priority over any contract business.

As for how this affects me mentally, I just get on with that kind of thing. I like to take the seasons as they come. I've still got nine months left on my contract, so from that point of view nothing changes, but on this camp I'm focusing more on being with England. Those contract conversations can wait, it's up to the people behind me to talk and sort those things out. The other conversation: England's style

Making the most of his time with the Three Lions, Kane also weighed in on the debate over the national team's style of play, after Thomas Tuchel and Anthony Gordon voiced doubts about the squad's ability to replicate Spain's possession based football. It's no small issue after England's second half collapse in the World Cup semifinal against Argentina, a match in which England took the lead but couldn't hold onto it, repeating a pattern already seen in other recent exits.

Kane was direct in analyzing that trend. He noted that plenty of national teams would envy England's recent record at major tournaments, but admitted that in decisive moments the team hasn't shown its true identity. He pointed not only to the Argentina match but also to the loss to Croatia in 2018 and the Euro final against Italy, situations in which, he explained, the team ended up playing scared of losing instead of going out to win, and lost anyway.

For the forward, that's the hardest part to accept, both for the players and the fans: falling short after having held the lead hurts more than a clear defeat. Kane was honest in admitting that the only way to know if England learned the lesson will be the next time the team faces a similar situation under pressure.
