Hlozek's Brace Rescues Hoffenheim in Comeback Win Over Stuttgart (2-1)

Adam Hlozek scored twice as Hoffenheim claimed a 2-1 win over Stuttgart at the SNP Arena, in a Bundesliga match where the home side led on the scoreboard for nearly the entire game despite seeing less of the ball. The result also runs counter to what we projected before kickoff: our preview gave Hoffenheim just a 29% chance of winning, compared to 48% for Stuttgart and 23% for a draw.

The first half was a showcase of home-side counterattacks. In the 12th minute, Hlozek finished with his right foot from the center of the box after an assist from Bambasé Conté on a quick break, and that 1-0 lead held until halftime even though Stuttgart created chances of its own, with Ermedin Demirovic testing his luck several times without finding the target. The tie did not last long. In the 66th minute, Hlozek struck again, this time with his left foot, to complete his brace after a counterattack set up by Adam Daghim, the same pattern that had opened the scoring: a quick transition, a clinical finish. That 2-1 scoreline held to the final whistle, though Stuttgart kept trying until the end with corners and headers, including one from Jeff Chabot and another from Bilal El Khannouss in the closing minutes, without luck.

A Match of Few Touches but Plenty of Bite

The numbers confirm that Hoffenheim won despite giving up the ball. Stuttgart controlled possession with 57.3% and comfortably outpaced Hoffenheim in passes (511 to 380), but it was the home side that posed the greater real threat.

That gap in shots and chances also shows up in the xG calculated after the fact from the match's shots: 3.19 for Hoffenheim versus 2.64 for Stuttgart, a figure that supports the idea that the home side did not win by chance, but rather by generating more and better scoring chances despite having less of the ball.
