Igor Lichnovsky returns to Universidad de Chile after 12 years abroad

Twelve years is a long time. Long enough to win titles, pack your bags more than half a dozen times, and have fans start wondering if that return would ever actually happen. Well, it happened: Igor Lichnovsky is once again a player for Universidad de Chile.

The club made it official right before the transfer window closed for the second half of the season, so the signing came down to the wire but it came through in full. The club itself announced it on social media with a message that captures what this return means inside the club:

The center back's journey has been no small feat. Since leaving the club, Lichnovsky played for Porto in 2014, then had stints in Spain wearing the colors of Sporting Gijon (2015) and Real Valladolid (2016). He then crossed the Atlantic to settle into Mexican soccer, where he built much of his career: Necaxa in 2017, Cruz Azul from 2018 to 2020, and later Tigres (2022-2023) and America (2023-2025). In between there was a stretch in Saudi soccer with Al-Shabab (2020-2022), and his last stop was in Turkey, with Fatih Karagumruk.

Twelve years, eight clubs, four different countries. Few Chilean players can point to such a long road before coming back home.

Guaranteed competition on defense

Now comes the soccer side of things, which is no small matter either. Lichnovsky joins a squad where the central defense already has established names under Fernando Gago: Matias Zaldivia, Nicolas Ramirez and Franco Calderon have been the regulars in that line. With his arrival, those three now face extra competition, and that is welcome heading into the final stretch of the season.

Will he start right away, or will he have to earn his spot bit by bit? That is exactly the challenge ahead of him. International experience carries weight, but Chilean soccer has its own rhythm, and Gago will have to decide how to work him in without disrupting what has already been working in the back line.

What is clear is that for La U, this signing carries a special significance beyond the purely tactical side: it is the return of a homegrown player who left to test himself abroad for more than a decade and now comes back to provide experience right when the team needs options on defense for the rest of the tournament.
