Igor Lichnovsky returns to Universidad de Chile after 13 years abroad
The national team defender landed in Santiago to finalize his move to the club that developed him, after stints in Portugal, Spain, Mexico and Turkey.

Thirteen years is a long time. He left as a kid hungry to make a name for himself abroad, and he's coming back as a seasoned defender with stamps from several countries in his passport. Igor Lichnovsky is back at Universidad de Chile, and this time everything points to him staying for good.
The national team center back landed Thursday morning in Santiago to iron out the final details of his return to the club that raised him as a player. It wasn't just any arrival: a group of blue faithful was waiting for him at the airport, and right there, suitcase still in hand, he had to deal with something that surely isn't as easy to control as a fifty fifty ball: emotion.
"This is an emotional shock for me, obviously because I grew up in this club," the defender admitted the moment he set foot back in the country. That's not just any line. Lichnovsky left La U in 2013 as a promising young talent, and since then he's traveled across half the world: he had a stint in Portugal, spent time in Spain, played in Mexico and, most recently, was wearing the colors of a club in Turkey.
That long and varied journey is exactly what gives this return extra weight. This isn't a player coming back because he had nowhere else to go. He's coming back after more than a decade playing abroad, with international experience and time spent in leagues of very different demands. And yet, he says the call of home was the one that always stuck with him.
A return that wasn't entirely a sure thing
The deal wasn't straightforward. Azul Azul's sporting director, Manuel Mayo, had raised some doubts about whether the signing would actually come together in this winter transfer window. There were moments of uncertainty, the kind that make fans nervous when a name starts circulating and then goes cold. But in the end the pieces fell into place, and everything suggests Lichnovsky will be presented as the student body's third addition of the半年 window.
What convinced him to come back right now? The player himself laid it out plainly when reporters asked him at the airport. "My family, my childhood, having left young, the moment La U is going through both externally and internally, because I think we have a great team. You always want to come back to your club and do important things," the defender said.

Beyond the affection and nostalgia, there's something concrete behind those words: the read of an experienced player on where the squad stands right now. Lichnovsky isn't talking about coming back to patch a hole, he's talking about joining a project that, in his own view, has what it takes to compete. What's left now is what's always left: for the deal to be formally signed and for the defender to start showing on the field why La U went looking for him after so many years away.
