Ilenikhena stuns Al Nassr with early double as Al Ittihad holds off late siege

Three minutes. That's all it took George Ilenikhena to put Al Ittihad ahead against Al Nassr, and before the half hour mark he already had two goals to his name to make it 2-0. The match finished 2-1, with the home side holding on at the Alinma Bank Stadium at King Abdullah Sport City through an entire second half of visiting pressure that never managed to flip the result.

The start was a gut punch for Al Nassr. In the 3rd minute, after a poorly cleared corner, Ilenikhena rose to head the ball low into the corner, next to the left post, for the 1-0. Cristiano Ronaldo's team hadn't even had time to settle in (Ronaldo himself had tried his luck in the first minute) when it already found itself behind. The bleeding continued in the 21st minute, when Houssem Aouar slipped in a through ball that Ilenikhena finished with his left foot for the 2-0, a brace that left Al Ittihad with the game practically wrapped up on paper.

Al Nassr responded before halftime: in the 35th minute, Ângelo made it 2-1 with a left-footed strike from the center of the box after a play started by Cristiano Ronaldo and João Félix. That goal changed the complexion of the match, because from then on the visitors took control of the ball and started generating chance after chance, though the score would not move again.

A second half of dominance with no reward

If the first half belonged to Al Ittihad, the second was the complete opposite. Al Nassr racked up corner after corner (fourteen in total by the end of the match) and chances from every angle, with João Félix, Ângelo, Samú Costa and Aiman Yahya all testing their luck, but home goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic and Al Ittihad's back line held firm. Things even got tougher for the home side with two injuries that forced early substitutions: Mukhtar Ali could not continue after the break and Ahmed Al Julaydan came off in the 52nd minute for the same reason.

The stats clearly reflect that tale of two halves: Al Nassr finished with more possession, more shots on target and far more clear-cut chances, but could not find the equalizer.

The xG calculated after the fact from the match's shots also backs up that sense of visiting dominance without reward: 1.766 for Al Ittihad against 2.268 for Al Nassr. In other words, Ronaldo's team generated more danger by this estimate, but ran into Ilenikhena's surgical finishing in the first half and the home side's defensive resistance in the second.

The result also runs counter to a lot of what was projected before kickoff. The preview gave Al Ittihad just a 27% chance of winning, against 48% for Al Nassr and 25% for a draw, with expected goals split at 1.33 for the home side and 1.82 for the visitors. None of that held up on the scoreboard: the team given less of a chance struck first and ended up taking home all three points.

What the result means in the standings

With this win, Al Ittihad jumps right into the thick of the title race, while Al Nassr suffers a setback that leaves it just a point behind today's rival in the standings. Both teams arrived with solid records in the competition (Al Ittihad unbeaten and Al Nassr with just one previous loss), which confirms that an edge in the standings doesn't always translate onto the field: here, the winner was whoever struck better at the right moments, not whoever had more of the ball.
