Independiente del Valle looks for an upset against Flamengo in Quito, banking on altitude and home advantage
The Ecuadorians know a one-goal lead at Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa could change the course of the series.

A one-goal lead can be worth everything at the Maracana. That is why Independiente del Valle knows that this Thursday, at Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa, there is a lot more than a simple first leg on the line. The club hosts the reigning Copa Libertadores champion, and the altitude of Quito, along with home field advantage, are the cards it has to try to flip a forecast that, on paper, clearly favors the Brazilians.
The quarterfinal matchup kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and puts two very different realities face to face. On the Ecuadorian side, a team that has been, by a wide margin, the best in its country and has held its own internationally throughout this edition of the tournament. On the Brazilian side, a Flamengo squad that arrives as the clear favorite, with a roster whose market value dwarfs that of the team from Sangolqui, but facing them in Quito is never comfortable.
A team balanced across every line
What Independiente del Valle has shown throughout the year is a solid collective structure, without relying on a single name. Up front there is Carlos Gonzalez, the tournament's top scorer with seven goals, joined by skillful players like Emerson Pata and Aron Rodriguez. In midfield, the experience of team captain and club legend Junior Sornoza runs the show. In the back, the Richard Schunke and Mateo Carabajal partnership gives stability to a defense rounded out by a top-class goalkeeper in Aldair Quintana.
That balance is exactly what coach Joaquin Papa needs to exploit. The plan is to be smart at home, avoid overexposing the team, and look for an edge that, even if minimal, allows them to travel to Rio de Janeiro with some cushion. Taking a two-goal lead would be the dream scenario for heading into the second leg at the Maracana in a different frame of mind, since Flamengo tends to be a crushing host.
The other thing to watch is counterattacks. Independiente del Valle will presumably be the side forced to push forward and search for the opposing goal at the Coloso del Batan, and that always opens up dangerous space against a rival with the speed and offensive class that the Brazilian team has.
Flamengo starts as the favorite, nobody disputes that. But the Ecuadorian club has enough arguments to believe in an even series, with real chances of pulling off the upset in Brazil. If it manages that, it would not be the first time Independiente del Valle has surprised people in the Libertadores: back in 2016 the club reached the tournament final, the best run in its history in the top continental club competition.
