Independiente del Valle holds 1-0 edge over Tolima ahead of Copa Libertadores round of 16 return leg
The Ecuadorians, riding a 14-game winning streak, advance with a draw, while the Colombians must win outright to reach the quarterfinals.
Winning 1-0 in Ibague is no small feat. Even less so when that result leaves a team just one draw away from reaching the quarterfinals. That is exactly the situation facing Independiente del Valle, who host Deportes Tolima this Tuesday, August 25, at Estadio IDV, in the second leg of the round of 16 in the Copa Libertadores.
Kickoff is set for 9:30 PM (Argentina, Uruguay, Chile) and 7:30 PM (Colombia, Peru, Ecuador), with the match airing across South America through Disney+'s Premium plan.
The Ecuadorians arrive in a stretch that borders on the surreal: they have strung together 14 straight wins after taking down Tolima in Ibague thanks to a goal from striker Aron Rodriguez. With that scoreline in hand, IDV only needs a draw at home to move on. Nothing more is required. And with home field advantage on their side, that edge carries real weight.
For Tolima, though, the challenge is twofold: not only must they overturn the deficit, but they also have to face the leader of the Ecuadorian league, who holds a 23-point lead over their closest pursuers and has all but wrapped up the title. Coach Sebastian Oliveros summed it up with a line that sounds straight out of the club's history books:
In Tolima's history, the important things have always been achieved away from home.Sebastian Oliveros
The names who could make the difference
At Independiente del Valle, everything runs through Junior Sornoza in one way or another. He is the emblem of the team, the one who brings skill and experience after four years wearing the shirt, a span in which he has already lifted a Copa Sudamericana and a Recopa. On the Colombian side, the player to watch is Jorge Hurtado, who creates havoc down the flanks. In the first leg he was the player who generated the most scoring chances, with three clear opportunities.
Here is how both sides arrive at the match: IDV comes off a 3-2 win over Leones del Norte in matchday 26 of the Ecuadorian championship, though it fielded a mixed lineup since the priority right now is the Libertadores. Tolima, meanwhile, played to a 0-0 draw at home against Bucaramanga and sits third in the Colombian league with 10 points. The present is far from easy for the Pijao squad, and their coach had to step up to defend the team's form with some pretty blunt words.
Something is going on here and I'll say it with all due respect, because I respect him as a professional. It's that everyone is still mourning coach Lucas Gonzalez like a widow. And if they don't get over that heartbreak, it's going to be very hard for any project to take shape.Sebastian Oliveros
The most recent meeting between the two sides speaks for itself: on August 18, Independiente del Valle won 1-0 with a goal from Aron Rodriguez, the same result that now forces Tolima to lay it all on the line in Quito.
