Independiente and San Lorenzo Have More Than a Derby on the Line in the Clausura 2026

Both teams arrive with new coaches and a pressing need for points to break into Copa Sudamericana territory.

A derby with a flavor of urgency. Independiente hosts San Lorenzo on Sunday, September 13, at 7:15 PM (Argentina, Uruguay and Chile time) and 5:15 PM for Colombia, Peru and Ecuador, at Estadio Libertadores de America-Ricardo Enrique Bochini. The broadcast will be handled by ESPN Premium for Argentine audiences, and the matchup corresponds to matchday nine of the Torneo Clausura 2026.

Beyond the usual color of an Independiente-San Lorenzo clash, this time the game carries an extra edge: both sides arrive bruised. Both clubs changed coaches during the competition after a rough stretch of results in Group A, so this isn't just a derby, it's also a chance for the new projects to finally show something concrete.

How Independiente and San Lorenzo Arrive

The "Rojo," led by Jackson Viera, comes off a narrow win over Central Cordoba, and that victory represents the only "tight" bright spot in a stretch where the team posted solid numbers: just one loss in its last four Clausura matches. The goal is clear and leaves little room for detours: crack the standings positions that grant a ticket to the 2027 Copa Sudamericana. To get there, there are names who can make the difference: Matias Abaldo, Santiago Montiel, Mateo Perez Curci and goalkeeper Rodrigo Rey stand out as the players to watch.

San Lorenzo arrives with an almost identical stat line: it also won its last match 1-0, in this case against Talleres de Cordoba and at home. The difference lies on the bench: this Sunday marks the debut of Ruben Dario Insua's third stint in charge of the "Ciclon," which by itself adds extra intrigue to the match. On the blue and red side, the players looking to lift the team's image are Alexis Cuello, Rodrigo Auzmendi, Facundo Farias and Nicolas Tripichio.

The Most Recent Meeting

The last time these two sides met was on May 2 of this same year, at Nuevo Gasometro, and the result favored Independiente 2-1. The "Rojo's" goals came from Matias Abaldo and Maximiliano Gutierrez, while Ezequiel Herrera pulled one back for San Lorenzo. That's not a minor detail looking at the recent head-to-head record, since the team from Avellaneda arrives with the psychological boost of having won the last direct meeting.

Is that enough to draw conclusions? Hardly, since both teams' form has zigzagged through coaching changes and uneven results. What's certain is that Sunday brings a derby, a need for points on both sides, and two coaches, Viera and Insua, who need their teams to start responding once and for all.
