Independiente Can't Hold the Lead, Draws with San Lorenzo in Copa Libertadores de America
The home side dominated with 66% possession and 23 shots, but a Facundo Farias goal in the 50th minute leveled the match in Argentina's Primera Division.
Independiente had it, dominated it, deserved it for long stretches, and in the end settled for a 1-1 draw with San Lorenzo that feels like a missed opportunity at Estadio Libertadores de America. The home side went up in the 6th minute and kept generating chances from there, but one San Lorenzo strike right at the start of the second half was enough to steal a point on the road, in Argentina's Primera Division.
The game broke open early. In the 6th minute, Juan Miguel Arrayago rose for a close-range header to make it 1-0, off a cross from Santiago Montiel that came after Independiente had won a free kick. It was the first sign of a pattern that repeated throughout the first half: Montiel whipping in crosses and Meza testing shots from outside the box, with Chimy Avila even ringing a header off the crossbar in the 32nd minute. Independiente went into the break with the narrow lead and the feeling that there was more to come.
But soccer also punishes what doesn't get finished, and San Lorenzo didn't need much to equalize. Just after the restart, in the 50th minute, Facundo Farias struck a right-footed shot from outside the area that flew into the top left corner, off an assist from Danilo Arboleda. A clean strike, almost the only real scoring threat from the visitors all match, that made it 1-1 and stayed that way even as Independiente kept pushing, with Montiel, Godoy, Millan and Tempone all trying their luck again and again without finding the net.
Dominance That Wasn't Enough
The numbers back up what was seen on the field: Independiente was clearly superior in terms of overall control of the game, but couldn't turn that into a difference on the scoreboard.
| Stat | Independiente | San Lorenzo |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 66.1 | 33.9 |
| Shots | 23 | 8 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 3 |
| Corners | 8 | 6 |
| Passes | 497 | 252 |
| Fouls committed | 12 | 17 |
Independiente nearly tripled San Lorenzo's shot total and roughly doubled its passes, but of those 23 attempts only 5 actually tested the keeper, a reflection of how many times the ball flew wide or was blocked inside the box. In our own xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, Independiente generated 1.804 expected goals against just 0.441 for San Lorenzo, a gap that on paper should have produced a clearer win but instead ended in a draw.
The preview we published ahead of the match gave Independiente a 43% chance of winning, against 22% for San Lorenzo and 35% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.09 for the home side and 0.71 for the visitors. The final result ended up being the least likely of the three scenarios under that projection, though the way the game played out, with Independiente pushing and creating more, was consistent with what had been forecast.
What the Result Leaves Behind
In the Group A standings, Independiente came into this match in sixth place with 14 points from 9 games played (4 wins, 2 draws, 3 losses), while San Lorenzo sat ninth with 11 points from the same number of matches (3 wins, 2 draws, 4 losses). The gap between the two sides was just 3 points before this meeting, something today's draw doesn't change much: these are two mid-table teams fighting to climb the standings.
For Independiente, it's a bittersweet result: the team dominated, created clear chances (including that Chimy Avila shot off the crossbar), and still couldn't hold onto the lead it had earned in the 6th minute. San Lorenzo, for its part, escaped with a point by the skin of its teeth: a single strike from Farias was enough to level a match in which it was thoroughly outplayed in possession and scoring chances.
