Independiente steals a golden win at the Alfredo Terrera with a Leonardo Godoy goal

Central Cordoba dominated with 30 shots but lacked a finishing touch, while Independiente cashed in on a quick counter to take all three points in a 0-1 result.

Independiente steals a golden win at the Alfredo Terrera with a Leonardo Godoy goal

Just one shot found the target, and that was enough for Independiente to walk away with all three points from the Alfredo Terrera. The 0-1 was settled in the 56th minute, when Leonardo Godoy latched onto a through ball from Mateo Perez Curci and finished low, just inside the left post, a minute after a header from Ezequiel Naya had forced a brilliant save from the visiting goalkeeper and grazed the post. The gap between what Central Cordoba controlled and what Independiente actually converted came down to exactly that: one game, one goal.

Because there was a lot more to it than that single shot. Central Cordoba came out firing from the opening whistle: by the 1st minute they were already testing the keeper through Fernando Martinez, and a few minutes later Marco Iacobellis forced another save right under the crossbar. The first half ended scoreless, but not for lack of trying from the home side. Between the corner kicks, blocked shots and attacks down the flanks, the Santiago del Estero side built up territorial dominance that simply did not show up on the scoreboard.

The goal that changed everything

The second half began with the same pattern: Central Cordoba pushing, Independiente biding its time. And Independiente found its opening on a quick counterattack. Just a minute after Naya's header grazed the frame of the goal in the 55th minute, Independiente answered with Godoy's finish. It was a short but lethal sequence: a through ball, a touch to control it, and a low shot with no chance for the home goalkeeper.

From there, Central Cordoba threw everything forward, bringing on Leonardo Sequeira, Alan Laprida and Horacio Tijanovich as the team kept manufacturing chance after chance: shots from Sequeira, from Dario Caceres, from Lucas Gonzalez, from Marco Iacobellis. None of them found the net. Independiente, with substitutes Josias Palais, David Martinez, Ramiro Martino, Franco Calderon and Luciano Cabral, dropped back and managed the lead through to the final whistle, even with five minutes of stoppage time still to play.

The numbers behind the game

The stat sheet tells the story well: plenty of offensive volume from Central Cordoba, but not enough precision to show for it.

Thirty shots for the home side against just 15 for the visitors, yet an identical number of shots on target, 5 apiece, goes a long way toward explaining the final result: Central Cordoba fired away often and mostly from distance, while Independiente made its chances count when it mattered. Our own xG estimate, built from the shots taken in the match, puts the number at 1.6 for the home side and 2.03 for the visitors, a reading that backs up the idea that Independiente, despite seeing less of the ball, created the more dangerous chances.

The pre-match projections had pointed to a tight contest, giving Central Cordoba a 30% chance of winning, 32% for a draw and 38% for Independiente, with expected goals of 1.03 for the home side and 1.21 for the visitors. The final result leaned toward that edge for the visitors, though it wrapped up in a tighter scoreline, 0-1, than the near-even numbers had suggested.

What it means in the standings

In Group A, Independiente arrived at this match sitting fifth with 13 points from 8 games played, while Central Cordoba sat 14th with 7 points from the same number of matches. The loss leaves the Santiago del Estero side unable to close that gap, while Independiente picks up another road win that keeps it in the fight for the upper half of the table. For Central Cordoba, the takeaway is a different one: it created chances, kept pushing, had the ball and the scoring opportunities, but once again fell short in front of goal when the match called for it.
