Instituto strikes once and steals three points from a dominant Defensa y Justicia
With just one shot on target, Instituto beat Defensa y Justicia 0-1 even though the hosts dominated with 67.1% possession and 20 shots but couldn't find the net, and Instituto remains atop Group A.

Defensa y Justicia spent the entire match crashing into Instituto's goal without reward. The hosts fired off 20 shots, controlled the ball with 67.1% possession, and still couldn't turn that dominance into a goal. Instituto needed just one clean strike to walk away with all three points at the Norberto Tomaghello: 0-1, a single well-placed shot that was enough to win on the road.
The goal came in the 22nd minute. A minute after Matias Tissera sent a shot just over the bar, Jeremias Lazaro popped up in the middle of the box and curled a right-footed finish into the right side of the net to make it 0-1. It was the play that decided everything, because from that point on the home side found themselves in a very different kind of game: plenty of the ball, but nothing to show for it.
Pressing hard, missing the target
The first half had already hinted at what was coming. Alex Luna tested the keeper twice for Instituto, Juan Gutierrez answered for Defensa y Justicia with a shot that was blocked in the 8th minute, and Leandro Fernandez came close in the 14th with a left-footed effort that drifted just wide. After Lazaro's goal, Defensa y Justicia pushed even harder: David Martinez rattled the crossbar with a shot before the break, and in the second half the story repeated itself over and over. Juan Gutierrez had as many as three clear chances in the span of a few minutes, David Barbona also had a go, and with substitutes already on the field, Tiziano Perrotta struck the post in the 83rd minute with a left-footed shot. On the other end, Matias Gallardo also hit the crossbar in stoppage time with a free kick, one of the few responses Instituto managed after halftime.
The shots-on-target column explains why the scoreboard never budged: just 3 apiece, despite the enormous gap in overall output. Defensa y Justicia created plenty, but couldn't hit the target often enough, while Instituto sat back and protected the lead, trusting in counterattacks and the kind of finishing that had already produced the only goal of the match.
The numbers behind the fruitless dominance
| Stat | Defensa y Justicia | Instituto |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 67.1 | 32.9 |
| Shots | 20 | 7 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 3 |
| Corners | 6 | 5 |
| Passes | 564 | 269 |
| Fouls committed | 14 | 8 |
Our expected goals estimate, based on the shots taken throughout the match, backs up that sense of wasted dominance: Defensa y Justicia racked up 1.599 xG compared to just 0.322 for Instituto. In other words, the home side created far more danger than the final score suggested, while the visitors converted their one big chance with maximum efficiency.
The result also ran counter to our pre-match projections. Our preview gave Defensa y Justicia a 38% chance of winning, against 32% for Instituto and 30% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.37 for the hosts and 1.24 for the visitors. What played out on the field was exactly the least likely scenario: the favorite left the pitch without scoring, and the away side won thanks to a level of finishing nobody saw coming.
What it means in the standings
The win keeps Instituto atop Group A with 29 points through 13 matches, while Defensa y Justicia stays in second place with 24, now 5 points behind their latest opponent. For the home side, the takeaway is clear: they created enough chances to win plenty of matches, but this time it was Instituto's sharpness and finishing that made the difference.
