Inter Miami tops New York City FC 2-0 as Berterame and De Paul deliver on Messi assists

Germán Berterame met a Luis Suárez cross in the 19th minute and needed only a right-footed strike through the middle of the goal to break the deadlock. Four minutes after play resumed from halftime, Rodrigo De Paul finished into the top left corner on a counterattack orchestrated by Lionel Messi, and that 2-0 scoreline held for the rest of the night at Nu Stadium. Inter Miami CF put the game away against New York City FC with two clinical strikes and a lead that, despite an even shot count, never looked in danger.

The first half had more back and forth than the final score suggests. New York City FC, with Nicolás Fernández Mercau as its sharpest threat from outside the box, tested Dayne St. Clair several times without luck: a shot saved near the post in the 8th minute, another in the 46th, and attempts from Aiden O'Neill that went wide or were blocked. But Inter Miami CF had the clearer chances: Sergio Reguilón tried a header in the 11th minute, Messi threatened with his left foot in the 30th and 38th, and Matías Galarza also tested the keeper from distance. It was in that stretch that Berterame scored in the 19th minute, a goal that proved to be the difference at the break.

The second half opened with the blow that settled the match. In the 49th minute, De Paul doubled the lead off a Messi assist on a quick transition, and the game entered a phase in which Inter Miami CF managed the clock comfortably. New York City FC turned to its bench (Hannes Wolf, Kevin O'Toole, Luighi, Malachi Jones and Talles Magno all came on) and found a bit more danger down the flanks, with shots from Bénie Traoré, Luighi and Fernández Mercau himself, but could not find the goal that would have put some tension back into the scoreline.

The closing stretch had its own share of drama. Riquelme Fillipi hit the post in the 93rd minute on another counterattack involving Messi, and in stoppage time referee Lorenzo Hernandez pointed to the spot for New York City FC after a foul by Ian Fray on Talles Magno. Fernández Mercau stepped up to take it, but his left-footed shot was saved low, and the 2-0 scoreline stood until the final whistle in this MLS matchup.

By the numbers

Inter Miami CF controlled more of the ball, with 57.2% possession to New York City FC's 42.8%, and created four big chances according to the match stats. Still, the overall shot count finished tied, a sign that New York City FC did not run out of ideas despite the loss.

Based on an in-house expected goals estimate calculated from the match's shots, Inter Miami CF accumulated 2.433 against 1.479 for New York City FC, a gap that backs up the efficiency of the two goals against the offensive volume the visitors also showed.

The preview had projected a 55% win probability for Inter Miami CF, with a 23% chance of a draw and 22% favoring New York City FC, along with expected goals of 2.15 for the home side and 1.34 for the visitors out of a total of 3.49. The final result landed pretty close to that script: an Inter Miami CF win by a scoreline that, in the end, is not far off from what was expected before kickoff.

In the Eastern Conference standings, Inter Miami CF holds onto second place with 52 points from 29 matches played, 19 points behind leaders Nashville SC. New York City FC, meanwhile, sits ten spots lower, in tenth place with 33 points from the same number of appearances. Three more points for one side, and another missed opportunity, including the failed penalty in stoppage time, for the other.
