Red Bulls Strike Once, Stun Dominant NYCFC

New York City FC controlled the ball, twice put itself in clear position in front of goal, and still walked away from Yankee Stadium empty handed. Julian Hall struck from outside the box in the 56th minute to score the only goal of the match and hand the New York Red Bulls a 1-0 win in MLS that will sting more than the final score suggests.

Because the numbers, in fact, tell a different story. New York City FC controlled 62.9% of possession, fired 16 shots to the visitors' 10, and put four balls on target compared to just one for the away side. It was a match of relentless but fruitless dominance: as early as the 4th minute Nicolas Fernandez Mercau had given a warning with a shot that drifted wide left, and between the 15th and 18th minutes came a flurry of corners and shots (Aiden O'Neill, Andres Perea, Fernandez Mercau again) that found no way past the goalkeeper. But the Red Bulls, who had been sitting deep for most of the game, found their moment on the counter. In the 56th minute, just seconds after Andres Perea had seen a shot blocked at the other end, Julian Hall pushed forward from outside the box and fired a low right footed shot that found the middle of the net. 1-0, and the entire script of the match turned upside down.

New York City FC threw everything at it afterward. Pascal Jansen's substitutions brought on Benie Traore and Alonso Martinez in the 61st minute, and both had their chances: Traore fired over the bar in the 76th minute, and Martinez came close to the post in the 75th and again in the 82nd. Thiago Martins tried a header in the 80th minute, and Traore himself forced a big save from the opposing goalkeeper deep into stoppage time, in the 91st minute. None of it went in. The Red Bulls, with Michael Bradley watching from the bench, defended with whatever tools they had left: 19 fouls committed compared to just 10 for the home side, a sign of a team that suffered through the match and held on however it could.

What the Numbers Say

The expected goals figure calculated from the match's shots also favors the home side: 2.29 against 1.61 for the visitors. It's a measure of what was created on the field, not a guarantee of anything, and this match is exactly the kind of example that proves it: the team that created more ended up losing.
