Italy Routs Turkey 1-4 in Nations League Rout
The Azzurri were ruthless in front of goal, and strikes from Bastoni, Frattesi, Kayode and Esposito left Turkey at the bottom of Group A1.

Eight minutes. That's all it took for Italy to make clear there would be no contest tonight at the Türk Telekom Stadium... actually, the Atatürk Sports Complex Stadium. Alessandro Bastoni rose for a header, striking left-footed from the center of the box off a corner kick to make it 0-1. It was just the appetizer for a devastating opening half hour that finished 1-4 in Italy's favor, with Turkey completely overwhelmed on home soil.
The second goal came a few minutes later, in the 21st minute, when Davide Frattesi finished from point-blank range next to the left post after a shot from Michael Kayode had been blocked right under the crossbar. Then before the half-hour mark, in the 26th minute, Kayode himself popped up through the middle of the box to make it 0-3, assisted by Francesco Pio Esposito. Turkey went into the break without having seriously troubled Gianluigi Donnarumma's goal.
The second half opened with a flash of home pride: in the 46th minute, right after the restart, Baris Alper Yilmaz finished through the middle of the goal off an assist from Oguz Aydin to make it 1-3. The hope didn't last long. Three minutes later, Sandro Tonali crashed a shot off the right post, and on the very next play, Francesco Pio Esposito headed home from the center of the box to seal the rout at 1-4 in the 49th minute. From there, the match fizzled out. Turkey created a few chances through Arda Güler and Kerem Aktürkoglu, but couldn't find a way past Donnarumma.
A game decided by details and efficiency
The numbers tell an odd story: Turkey had more possession and more total shots, but Italy was clinical when it mattered.
| Stat | Turkey | Italy |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 53.8 | 46.2 |
| Shots | 15 | 14 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 8 |
| Big chances | 2 | 1 |
| Corners | 6 | 2 |
| Passes | 573 | 499 |
| Fouls committed | 12 | 21 |
That's the key stat right there: Italy put eight of its fourteen shots on frame, an extremely high conversion rate, while Turkey managed to direct only three of its fifteen attempts on target. According to our estimate of xG generated in the match (an in-house calculation done after the fact based on shot location, not a prediction), Italy generated 2.09 expected goals to Turkey's 1.53. The actual gap on the scoreboard ended up considerably wider than those numbers would suggest, which speaks to a particularly surgical finishing display from Roberto Mancini's side.
What it means for the group standings
The result has direct consequences for Group A1 of the UEFA Nations League. With this win, Italy moves to 3 points from 2 matches played, with a record of one win and one loss, sitting in third place. Turkey, meanwhile, remains pointless after 2 matches played, with two losses and a goal difference of -4, at the bottom of the group. The gap between the two sides in the table stands at 3 points. At the top, France leads with 6 points from two wins, followed by Belgium with 3.
For Turkey, coached by Vincenzo Montella, the night raises more questions than it answers: conceding four goals at home, with three of them coming in a span of just 18 minutes straddling the first half and the start of the second, is an issue that will need addressing. For Italy, the takeaway is different: sharp finishing up front, with Francesco Pio Esposito, Kayode, Bastoni and Frattesi sharing the goals, and a ruthless way of converting every clear chance that left their opponent with little room to respond.
