Jackson torches the leaders: brace sinks Manchester City as Aston Villa win 2-1
Despite dominating possession and chances, Manchester City fell 2-1 to an Aston Villa side that made the most of its efficiency through two goals from Nicolas Jackson.

Barely five minutes had gone by when Villa Park was already on its feet. Nicolas Jackson struck a right-footed shot from inside the box, into the top left corner, after an assist from John McGinn, putting Aston Villa ahead 1-0 against the Premier League leaders. The final score ended up 2-1 in favor of the home side, with Jackson's brace handing Manchester City just its second defeat of the season.
The script seemed written for City, who arrived as leaders and heavy favorites according to our pre-match projection: we gave them a 42% chance of winning against 31% for Aston Villa, with a draw at 27%, and expected goals of 1.63 for Enzo Maresca's side compared to 1.38 for Unai Emery's team. None of that played out on the scoreboard, though Maresca's side did enough to warrant a different outcome: they dominated possession at 63.2% and produced, according to our post-match xG estimate, 2.246 expected goals to Aston Villa's mere 0.77. The numbers confirm City deserved more than they got, but soccer is decided in the box, and there Aston Villa was far more clinical.
Jackson strikes again
After the early blow, City took time to respond and only found the equalizer at the start of the second half. In the 51st minute, Erling Haaland rose unmarked at close range, heading low into the left side of the net to finish off a cross from Iliman Ndiaye following a set piece into the box. It looked like the start of a City comeback, with the visitors pushing forward and creating clear chances through Josko Gvardiol and Jeremy Doku. But just eight minutes later, in the 59th minute, Jackson struck again: this time with a right-footed shot from the center of the box, straight down the middle, set up by substitute Ibrahim Mbaye, who had just come on. That second goal from Jackson proved to be the winner.
City pressed hard in the closing stretch: shots from Phil Foden, another Haaland header deep into stoppage time in the 92nd minute that failed to find the target, but Aston Villa held on to their lead until the final whistle.
The numbers behind the dominance that wasn't enough
| Stat | Aston Villa | Manchester City |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 36.8 | 63.2 |
| Shots | 8 | 15 |
| Shots on target | 2 | 7 |
| Big chances | 1 | 3 |
| Corners | 4 | 7 |
| Passes | 314 | 528 |
| Fouls committed | 21 | 17 |
The table makes clear who carried the weight of the game. City completed nearly double the passes, had nearly double the shots, and tripled the big chances. But Aston Villa needed just two shots on target to score two goals, an efficiency that explains why the result went the opposite way of what the stats suggested.
Where it leaves the table
In the Premier League standings, Manchester City remain in first place with 21 points from 8 games played, though this loss is only their second of the season. Aston Villa, meanwhile, sit in seventh place with 11 points, level with Everton, built on three wins, two draws and three losses, with a goal difference of -3. The gap between the two sides in the table stands at 10 points, something today's result doesn't erase but does make a little more uncomfortable for the leaders.
For Aston Villa, the win carries the value of having beaten the league leaders despite seeing less of the ball and creating fewer clear chances. For Manchester City, the match leaves the sense that they created enough to win but couldn't turn it into a result, something their goal difference on the season (+11) rarely fails to deliver.
