Juan Guillermo Cuadrado Returns to Colombia After 17 Years in Europe to Join Millonarios

The 38-year-old fullback signs as a free agent after leaving Pisa and joins the Embajadores in search of experience in the final stretch of his career.

Juan Guillermo Cuadrado Returns to Colombia After 17 Years in Europe to Join Millonarios

Seventeen years later, Juan Guillermo Cuadrado is coming home. The Colombian fullback and winger, 38 years old, is the newest player at Millonarios, in what is shaping up to be one of the biggest signings the Liga BetPlay has seen in a long time.

The news carries real weight when you consider the path this Cucuta native has traveled. Cuadrado left Colombian soccer back in 2009, departing Independiente Medellin to try his luck in Italy. He never played in his home country again after that. Now he signs with the Albiazul side as a free agent, having just finished his contract with Pisa, the club where he played the 2025/26 season, making 21 appearances and scoring one goal.

What he accomplished in Europe over nearly two decades explains why his arrival is generating so much buzz. In Italy he became a key piece for Juventus, the club with which he won an incredible 11 titles. He also had a short but productive stint with Chelsea in England, and left his mark at clubs like Udinese, Lecce, Fiorentina, Atalanta and Inter Milan, the latter another stop where he also celebrated championships. On top of all that is his starring role with the Colombian national team, with which he played in the 2014 and 2018 World Cups. Few Colombians can point to a resume like that in European soccer.

The transfer rumor mill had linked him to other Colombian clubs, including Medellin and Atletico Nacional. But in the end it was Millonarios that landed his signature, arriving at an opportune moment for the squad coached by Alberto Gamero. Just a couple of matchdays ago, the Embajadores lost Jhomier Guerrero to injury, a reinforcement who had arrived specifically to cover the right back spot, a position Cuadrado knows inside and out from everything he played there in Europe.

Experience for the Final Stretch of a Career

Beyond the name recognition and the resume, what Millonarios is after is pure experience during a stretch of the season where every detail matters. Cuadrado arrives in what looks like the final chapter of his professional career, betting on a club that needs stability right in the position he has mastered.

The challenge now is adapting quickly to a soccer landscape he left 17 years ago and proving that, even at 38, he still has plenty left to offer on the field.
