Kvernadze bails out Frosinone late as Venezia's comeback falls just short

Frosinone jumped out to a 2-0 lead on an Antonio Raimondo brace before halftime, and it looked like the afternoon at the Benito Stirpe would be a comfortable one. It wasn't. Venezia, arriving without a single point, pushed hard after the break, tied it up 2-2 in barely eight minutes and forced the home side to go find the winner all over again. Giorgi Kvernadze found it in the 82nd minute for the final score of 3-2.

The first half was a Frosinone monologue. In the 20th minute, Raimondo headed home inside the box off an Anthony Oyono cross to make it 1-0, and he struck again in the 38th, this time with a close-range right-footed finish set up by Patrizio Masini, for the 2-0 that stood at the break.

The second half flipped the script. Venezia, who had controlled far more of the ball without anything to show for it on the scoreboard, cashed in on the counterattack: in the 65th minute, John Yeboah curled a left-footed finish into the top corner off a Gianluca Busio assist to make it 2-1. Eight minutes later, in the 73rd, Richie Sagrado tapped in a close-range cross from Antoine Hainaut to level it at 2-2. The game had flipped emotionally, if not yet on the scoreboard for good, because Frosinone still had one more card to play.

Kvernadze played that card in the 82nd minute, driving a right-footed shot from the center of the box that put the home side back in front, and this time the lead held all the way through, even with six minutes of second-half stoppage time added on.

What the numbers say

The stats tell a story of territorial dominance for Venezia that never translated into a win. The visitors held more of the ball and completed more passes, but Frosinone was sharper in front of goal.

For Venezia, who also had to deal with an Armel Bella-Kotchap injury in the first half (Richie Sagrado came on, and later scored the equalizer), the takeaway is a mixed one: they showed fight and clawed back into a match that had gotten away from them, but they leave with nothing to show for it once again.

For Frosinone, on the other hand, the match confirms it can go through a rough patch and still find an answer: they went up in commanding fashion, watched Venezia level it in eight minutes, and had the composure to settle it with a late goal. Wins like this one, earned through some anxious moments, tend to count for just as much as the comfortable ones.
