Cremonese oust Parma with a dominant Coppa Italia performance

Cremonese won 2-0 with goals from Lottici and Licina at the Tardini, showing far more attacking clarity than a Parma side that never found a response.

Cremonese oust Parma with a dominant Coppa Italia performance

Four minutes. That's all it took for Cremonese to land a blow on Parma that the home side could never overturn. Simone Lottici Tessadri finished with his right foot from the center of the box after a Marco Nasti assist, and that early strike set the tone for the rest of the night at the Ennio Tardini. The final score, 0-2, sent Cremonese through to the next round of the Coppa Italia with plenty of room to spare.

Parma tried to respond quickly: in the 6th minute Lautaro Valenti tested the keeper from inside the box off a corner, but his shot flew well over the bar. Cremonese, meanwhile, kept generating danger through Adin Licina, who had a couple of chances before halftime, one of which forced the home goalkeeper into a stretching save toward the top corner. The hosts had their moments too: Matija Frigan and Giovanni Fabbian both tried their luck from outside the box in the opening half hour, without success.

The blow that settled the first half arrived right before the break. In the 40th minute, a Cremonese counterattack ended with a through ball from Tommaso Berti for Licina, who finished from point blank range with his left foot through the middle of the goal: 0-2. Parma had an almost immediate reply, with a header from Nesta Elphege that the visiting goalkeeper saved low, but the home side reached the break needing to erase a two goal deficit.

A second half of persistence with no reward

Parma made changes right from the start of the second half, bringing on David Romero, Mandela Keita and El Bilal Touré in search of fresh energy up front. There were flashes: Romero fired wide in the 55th minute, Almqvist tried his left foot near the box in the 82nd, and Touré headed just wide in the 76th. But Cremonese never let up: Licina and Vandeputte both had clear chances of their own shortly after the restart, and Alessandro Vogliacco and Manuel De Luca also troubled the home goal in the second half, with De Luca clipping the crossbar in the 72nd minute.

The match numbers capture what unfolded on the field fairly well: a sharper, more incisive Cremonese, and a Parma side that pushed forward without the cutting edge needed to get back into the game.

The big chances tally, 5 for Cremonese against just 1 for Parma, goes a long way toward explaining why the scoreline held steady in the second half. Our xG estimate, calculated from the shots taken in the match, points in the same direction: 2.18 for Cremonese against 0.82 for Parma, a gap that backs up the visitors' edge in creating chances with real bite.

Before kickoff, our projection had this as a much tighter affair: 44 percent odds for Parma, 33 percent for a draw and 23 percent for Cremonese, with expected goals of 1.22 for the home side and 0.80 for the visitors. What actually happened on the field was almost the opposite of that forecast: Cremonese not only won, they did so with more clear chances and more xG generated than their opponent, completely flipping the pre-match expectations by the final whistle.

Parma are left with the feeling of having arrived late to the fight, trapped from the 4th minute by a scoreline they could never claw back despite the substitutions and second half pushes. Cremonese, on the other hand, managed the lead with patience and no real scares, powered by Licina's finishing and Berti's work in building the attack. With this result, Cremonese's run in the Coppa Italia continues into the next round, while for Parma the match leaves more questions than answers about how they lost control of the game so early.
