Messi Cup 2026 doubles in size: 16 U16 clubs set to battle it out in Miami
Barcelona, Chelsea, Boca, River and 12 other youth academies will compete from October 25 to November 1 in a Gold Cup and Silver Cup format.

Miami is gearing up to host some of the brightest young talent in world soccer. The Messi Cup returns for its second edition with a change that completely reshapes the tournament: it's growing from 8 to 16 U16 teams, doubling its capacity and bringing together academies from clubs that rarely share a field at the youth level.
The tournament, driven by Lionel Messi, will take place from October 25 to November 1, 2026 at Inter Miami's facilities, with Inter Miami CF Stadium serving as the main venue for the group stage and early knockout matches.
Who's playing? The list of participants is enough to excite any fan of youth soccer: Inter Miami CF, Ajax, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Benfica, FC Barcelona, Palmeiras, Arsenal, Newell's Old Boys, Flamengo, UE Cornella, Manchester City, Boca Juniors, River Plate, Independiente del Valle and Chelsea will all send their U16 academy sides to compete.
Messi, the organizer of the competition, explained the purpose behind the project in words that make the tournament's intent clear:
The Messi Cup was created so these kids can have a unique experience, both on and off the field, at a really important stage of their development, and so they can start to understand what it means to compete at the highest international level. We're thrilled to see the tournament grow and to be able to bring together players from so many great clubs around the world to compete, share experiences and, most of all, enjoy the game.Lionel Messi
Format: groups, Gold Cup and Silver Cup
The competition structure was also designed with player development in mind. The 16 teams will be split into four groups. The top two from each group will advance to the Gold Cup, while the rest will fight for positioning in the Silver Cup, ensuring every squad keeps competing through the end of the tournament regardless of how they fared in the opening round.
As for match length, the group stage, quarterfinals and placement matches will be played in two 30 minute halves. For the semifinals and the final, the format extends to two 35 minute halves, with penalty kicks to break any tie if needed. That final, the one everyone will be waiting for, will be held at Chase Stadium.
For those who can't make it in person, there's good news: no match will go unseen, as every game will be broadcast live on ESPN and Disney+ Plan Premium.
With double the teams compared to its first edition, Messi Cup 2026 aims to establish itself as a can't miss event on the international youth soccer calendar, a place where kids from different leagues and continents share a field before their paths, who knows, might cross again in the professional game.
