Canada's Northern Super League Expands with New Winnipeg Club and $30 Million Investment

Just a year ago, Canada stood alongside Haiti as the only country to have played in a Women's World Cup without a professional league of its own at home. It sounded almost unbelievable for a country that had won Olympic gold at Tokyo 2021. That chapter is now history, and the Northern Super League (NSL) isn't just up and running, it's growing at a pace that surprises even the people who founded it.

The league, co-founded by former Canadian national team player Diana Matheson, announced two pieces of news this summer that confirm the project is serious business. First: Winnipeg will field a team starting in 2027, taking the league from six clubs to seven. Second, and perhaps more significant: London-based sports investment firm APEX will put up to $30 million on the table to back the tournament's development. That money adds to the $5.45 million the Canadian government had already committed on the very day the NSL's first-ever final was played.

To understand where all this comes from, it helps to remember how it started. The league launched with six teams: Halifax Tides, Montreal Roses, Calgary Wild, Ottawa Rapid, AFC Toronto and Vancouver Rise, with brands like Coca-Cola, Toyota and DoorDash on board as sponsors. The first goal in league history was scored by midfielder Quinn, from the penalty spot, in Vancouver's 1-0 win over Calgary in front of more than 14,000 fans at BC Place. That same Rise side would go on to win the title, beating AFC Toronto 2-1 in front of 12,429 fans at BMO Field in Toronto.

Quinn, who played in the NWSL with Seattle Reign before signing with Vancouver, looks back on that start with some perspective.

I know my first season in the NWSL doesn't compare to what the NSL is now. I think it set a really incredible standard from the get-go, and I think the crowds we're getting, the resources each team has, have set the bar really high for what this can become.Quinn

From Starting Up to Scaling Up

League president Christina Litz describes year two as the moment the league moved from survival mode to planning for the future.

We set pretty high goals for ourselves, and by the end of the season we'd hit every one of them, in attendance, corporate support, broadcast deals and viewership. I'd say the theme of year two has been growth and long-term stability for this league, making sure we move from being a startup to being able to scale the way we need to in order to keep pursuing those ambitions.Christina Litz

The new Winnipeg club arrives with familiar names from Canadian soccer. Desiree Scott, also an Olympic champion from Tokyo, is a co-founder of the club and will serve as vice president of community and player experience, while former Portland Thorns coach Rob Gale will take over as sporting director.

The NSL's growth isn't happening in a vacuum. The NWSL added Boston Legacy and Denver Summit this season, with Atlanta and Columbus joining in 2028, and England's Women's Super League brought in Birmingham City and Crystal Palace to round out a 14-team league. Women's soccer is expanding on multiple fronts at once, and Canada is no longer watching from the sidelines.

On the field, the regular season is heading into its final stretch with Ottawa Rapid atop the table, two points ahead of Montreal Roses. The two-legged semifinals kick off on October 31, with the final set for November 14.

Vancouver Rise midfielder Nikki Stanton, who has played in both the NWSL and the NSL, sums it up with enthusiasm.

Last year blew away all my expectations. This entire country was ready to have a women's sports team. Every single person I tell that I play for the Rise says, oh, you guys won the championship. With fresh investment, a new club on the way, and a calendar that also connects with continental tournaments like the 2027 CONCACAF W Cup and the 2028 women's Club World Cup, the NSL appears to have shed its label as an experiment to become a permanent fixture on the women's soccer map.
