UEFA Fines Red Star Belgrade $104,500 Over Stadium Tribute to Ratko Mladic

The Serbian club also received a ban on away ticket sales after chants and a banner honoring the former commander convicted of genocide.

The scoreline was already ugly for Red Star Belgrade: 5-1 on the road against Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League. But what happened in the stands ended up mattering more than the result. On August 27, as the Serbian side collapsed on the field, a section of its fans dedicated chants, salutes and even a banner to Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb commander convicted of genocide, who had died that same day in a jail cell in The Hague.

UEFA wasted no time responding. The governing body confirmed a fine of 90,000 euros (about $104,500) against the club over the incident, which included charges for "chants of an inappropriate nature for a sporting event" and, more seriously, for "racist and/or discriminatory conduct."

It's worth remembering who Mladic was to understand the weight of the gesture: he commanded the massacre of more than 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenica in 1995, one of the darkest episodes of the Balkan wars, along with other war crimes. He was serving a life sentence for genocide and died at 84 still behind bars. The fact that part of the Red Star fan base chose that very day to honor him, banners of gratitude included, left no room for ambiguity before European soccer's disciplinary body.

The punishment didn't stop at the fine. UEFA also barred Red Star from selling tickets to its own fans for the club's next away match in European competition. That sanction will kick in when the Serbian champions travel to Switzerland to face Lugano, now in the Conference League after being eliminated in the Europa League playoff round. On top of that, a further away ticket ban was handed down but suspended for a two-year probationary period.

A record that keeps piling up

None of this is an isolated case for the club. Red Star, European champions in 1991, carries a long history of UEFA sanctions over its fans' behavior, including racist abuse targeting people of Roma ethnicity on past occasions. Every new incident adds to a file that was already thick, which explains why the European body chose this time to pair the financial fine with a concrete restriction on away attendance.

For a club with Red Star's continental pedigree, sanctions like this keep drawing attention to something that has become all too familiar: the gap between what happens on the field and what happens in the stands, and how the latter keeps shaping the team's competitive future as well.
