Lautaro Martínez turns down Barcelona, confirms he's staying at Inter

The Milan club's captain revealed at the Gran Gala del Calcio that the Catalan side tried to sign him, but his commitment to the Nerazzurri remains unshakeable.

Barcelona wanted him, tried to get him, and came up short. Now the man himself has confirmed it, no names withheld. Lautaro Martínez broke his silence on one of the most persistent rumors of the last transfer window: yes, the Catalan club came knocking. But Inter's captain made things clear before anyone had a chance to doubt it: he's staying in Milan.

The story makes sense when you trace it back. Barcelona needed a true penalty-box striker, the kind who guarantees goals on the big nights, and their first choice was Julián Álvarez. Atlético Madrid shut that door firmly, leaving no room for negotiation, and that's when Lautaro's name started gaining traction as the backup plan. Inter, for its part, never showed any sign of being willing to entertain offers for its captain, and that firmness ended up killing off any real chance of a transfer.

What's notable is that, until the Gran Gala del Calcio, all of this had remained in the realm of speculation. Nobody had confirmed it from the inside. It was right there, in the middle of an awards night, that Lautaro himself decided to come clean in front of Sky Italia's microphones.

Getting these offers is always flattering because you work to stay at the top of football. The rumors were true.Lautaro Martínez

So why didn't he leave? Because, as he explained himself, his head and his heart are still with Inter. There was no hesitation and no hedging in his answer.

I've always said I want to stay at Inter, with my teammates and our fans. As long as they want me, I'll stay at this club.Lautaro Martínez

With that mix of humor and realism that tends to come with players who've already spent several seasons at the top level, the Argentine forward also offered a thought on just how fleeting success can be in this sport: "We all know that in football, once you're no longer useful, they get rid of you," he said with a smile.

An award with a special flavor

The gala wasn't just about transfer talk. Lautaro was named Serie A's best forward for the 2025/26 season, an honor he valued all the more because it came from votes cast by his own teammates. "It's always an honor to get your teammates' votes. We're a great group and we've had a great season," he said.

The forward also looked back on his time with the Argentina national team at the 2026 World Cup. Self-critical but satisfied, he admitted he would have liked more minutes: "I think I had a great tournament. I was hoping to play a bit more, but we're a group with so many excellent players," he explained, making clear just how fierce the internal competition is within the championship-winning squad.

Between individual awards, transfer rumors, and a World Cup along the way, Lautaro closed out the night with the message that ultimately matters most to Inter fans: "Being at Inter is a source of pride, I'm happy. I want to stay here and fight every day to keep growing and competing for major titles."
