Lautaro Martínez scores twice to turn around Inter's night, moves into third on club's all-time scoring list

Ten minutes. That's how long Napoli's lead lasted at San Siro, and in that span Lautaro Martínez reminded everyone why he wears the captain's armband at Inter. The match looked to be heading Napoli's way. First Politano in the 50th minute and then Højlund in the 53rd pounced on a couple of defensive lapses from Inter to go up on the scoreboard and quiet, at least for a while, the Giuseppe Meazza. With that one-two punch, anyone would have thought the night was turning sour for the home side.

But Inter didn't take long to respond. In the 56th minute, Barella found Zielinski, who sent a driven cross in from the right. Dimarco, alert at the back post, knocked it back toward the middle, and there in the six-yard box was Lautaro, beating Rrahmani to the ball to pull one back. It was the first sign that the story wasn't over yet.

The equalizer came off a header, with Marcus Thuram doing the honors, and from there the match turned into a genuine thriller. With the score tied 2-2, both sides pushed for more and even squandered incredible chances to settle it sooner. It was in the middle of that back-and-forth that Thuram couldn't quite poke the ball home inside the box, it came loose, and there was Lautaro again. The forward shook off two defenders and calmly finished for the final 3-2. Wild celebrations broke out at San Siro for a win that felt like a release.

What stands out is that these were Lautaro's first goals of the season. His last goals had come in the 2026 World Cup semifinal against England, so the timing couldn't have been better to end the drought. With this brace, the captain reached 177 goals in Inter colors, moving into third place on the club's all-time scoring list.

The goal now looks clear: fight again for the Capocannoniere title, which he already won in 2024 and 2026. If this comeback is any indication, the Toro seems determined not to let a third one slip away.
