Leandro Brey Concedes Another Olympic Goal: Racing Caught Him Just Like Di María Did Months Ago
Boca's goalkeeper was beaten by a direct corner kick once again, this time scored by Gastón Lodico in the Copa Argentina quarterfinals, in a scene nearly identical to the one Di María produced against Rosario Central.
Same nightmare, different day. Once again, a corner kick that instead of finding a head went straight into the net. Soccer played a cruel joke on Leandro Brey once again this Sunday, and this time the stage was nothing less than the Copa Argentina quarterfinals against Racing.
The man behind the trick was Gastón Lodico, Racing's number 20, who in the 19th minute of the first half picked up the ball from the left and floated it into the box with such precise curl that nobody had to touch it. It sailed straight in at the far post, making it 1-0 for Racing over Boca.
An Olympic goal, the kind that sparks debate on any field, but in Brey's case it's starting to feel like a habit. Coincidence, or something that keeps happening too often to ignore?
The Ghost of Arroyito
Because this had happened to him before. And not that long ago. It was on matchday eight of the 2025 Torneo Clausura, when Boca visited Rosario Central at the Gigante de Arroyito. That day, the man who caught him off guard from a corner was none other than Ángel Di María, who in the 24th minute of the first half tried his luck from the corner flag and curled it in almost identically, an Olympic goal for the ages that ended up being the equalizer in what finished as a 1-1 draw.
On that occasion, Brey couldn't react in time and watched as the World Cup champion celebrated a play as simple as it was effective. Sunday's scene against Racing was, in essence, an almost carbon copy: another corner, another Boca goalkeeper caught late at the far post, and another rival celebration.
It's only two incidents, but enough for the comparison to write itself. Two Olympic goals in the span of a few months, both from the same side of the field and with a similar pattern in the goalkeeper's reaction, leave behind a recurring image that's already becoming part of soccer folklore.
