León downs Necaxa 2-1 at Estadio Victoria despite playing a man down since the 59th minute

León pulled off a hard-earned 2-1 win over Necaxa at Estadio Victoria in a Liga MX clash where the visitors had to overcome a red card and a second-half response from the home side.

A back-and-forth affair

The visitors struck first through Daniel Arcila, who caught everyone off guard in the 26th minute with a long-range effort from a tight angle on the left that snuck into the middle of the goal to make it 0-1. Arcila had already given warning signs with a couple of earlier attempts, and León looked sharper in the final third even though Necaxa controlled more of the ball.

The first half ended with that slim visiting advantage, but things got even more interesting at the start of the second. In the 59th minute came the game's most chaotic moment: the referee showed a red card to Rodrigo Echeverría for fighting, a call that went to VAR review before being confirmed, leaving León down to ten men.

Far from folding, the home side used the extra man to level the score. In the 64th minute, Matías Espíndola finished with his right foot from close range, into the top right corner, off an assist from Juan Valencia, making it 1-1 and lighting up the stands at Estadio Victoria. The celebration was short-lived, though: just seven minutes later, in the 71st minute, Juan Domínguez restored León's lead with a left-footed strike from outside the box, assisted by Luis Valadez, sealing the final 1-2 despite León playing a man short.

By the numbers

Necaxa controlled possession and generated more offensive volume, but lacked precision in the key moments. León, more pragmatic, made the most of its chances to grab all three points even while playing most of the second half with ten men.

According to our own estimate based on shot location, the match's xG favored Necaxa with 1.733 against León's 1.115, confirming that the home side created more and better chances but couldn't turn that into goals.

What the preview said

Ahead of the match, our projection gave Necaxa a 40% chance of winning, a 28% chance of a draw and a 32% chance of a León victory, with expected goals estimated at 1.50 for the hosts and 1.34 for the visitors. The final result went against that forecast: despite being favorites and controlling much of the play, Necaxa ended up losing to a León side that made the most of its opportunities more efficiently, even while playing a man down from the 59th minute onward.

What the result means

With this result, both teams now sit at 6 points in the tournament, each with two wins and two losses, with no gap between them in the standings. Necaxa suffers its second defeat, while León picks up a valuable win that lets it keep pace in the table despite the setback of the red card. The match made clear that efficiency, rather than possession or shot volume, ended up tipping the scales at Estadio Victoria.
