Jefferson Lerma and Daniel Muñoz, the Colombians confirmed in the Premier League
Both play for Crystal Palace, but their immediate futures look very different: Lerma just signed a new deal, while Muñoz could be on his way out within the week.
The Premier League kicks off in just a few days and, amid all the last-minute transfer rumors, one thing is clear: Jefferson Lerma and Daniel Muñoz remain, for now, the only Colombians with a confirmed club in England's top flight. Both play for Crystal Palace, though one of them appears to have a very different immediate future than the other.
The European transfer window closes in just a week, and the flow of Colombian players toward England has been fairly limited. There's been talk of Newcastle's interest in midfielder Richard Ríos, but that's still nothing more than speculation: there's been no concrete progress, nothing close to a deal.
So while that situation plays out, it's Lerma and Muñoz who represent the country as the season gets underway, wearing the shirt of a Crystal Palace side that arrives fresh off winning the Conference League, a title both players helped secure. Lerma, in fact, just signed a contract extension through two more years, a clear sign the club is counting on him for the medium term. Muñoz, on the other hand, might not be sticking around: three clubs have expressed interest in signing him.
Lerma, a trusted piece for Glasner
For the midfielder from Tolú Viejo, this will be his fourth season at Palace and already his ninth in English football, a journey that has turned him into a player with real Premier League experience. Last season saw his minutes dip somewhat, but his versatility, capable of playing as a center-back or in central midfield, made him a player manager Oliver Glasner was unwilling to part with. That campaign ended with two trophies in the cabinet: the Community Shield and the Conference League.
Muñoz, with a move on the table
Muñoz's case is different. After three years as an undisputed starter at right-back, his future at the club is now uncertain. He's being tracked closely by Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest, the latter with a particular incentive: that's where Glasner himself landed, the very coach under whom Muñoz established himself at Palace. The Selhurst Park club won't let him go cheaply: they're seeking an offer in the region of 25 million pounds before allowing him to leave.
Will his situation be sorted out before the season begins? That's the question hanging over Palace these days. In the meantime, the calendar waits for no one. The Premier League gets underway on Friday, August 21, with defending champions Arsenal hosting newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium. Crystal Palace, for its part, will make its own debut a day later, on Saturday the 22nd, traveling to face none other than one of the clubs chasing Muñoz: Everton.
