Liga de Quito Draws 1-1 with Mirassol in Brazil, Keeps Home Edge for the Return Leg
Estrada scored late to rescue a point that leaves the Ecuadorian side with home field advantage in the Copa Libertadores round of 16 series.
Michael Estrada missed before he finally connected, and that might be the best way to sum up Liga de Quito's night in Brazil. The forward endured a first half to forget, but showed up right when his team needed him most. The final result: a 1-1 draw against Mirassol at Estadio Jose Maria de Campos Maia, in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores round of 16.
The match started off on the wrong foot for the Ecuadorians. A glaring defensive error by Luis Segovia handed Mirassol the opening goal in the first half, and to make matters worse, Estrada squandered at least a couple of clear chances that could have changed the course of the game much sooner. With that scenario, Liga went into the break trailing on the scoreboard and with the feeling of letting a big opportunity slip away.
But soccer, at times, comes down to the details of the second half. The introduction of Gonzalo Valle gave Gustavo Alvarez's team a different look, with better ball circulation and more danger near the opposing goal. And in the closing stretch, when the match already smelled like a loss, Estrada showed up again, this time making it count, to seal the final 1-1.
An Edge That Matters
Why talk about a strategic advantage from a simple draw? Because Liga de Quito didn't lose on Brazilian soil, and because the return leg will be played somewhere the team feels right at home. At Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado, known as Casa Blanca, the Ecuadorians won all three of their home matches in the group stage of this 2026 Libertadores edition. And there's a detail that brightens the picture even further: in that same group stage, Liga had already beaten this very same Mirassol side, and by a resounding 2-0.
Given that history, it's no surprise the odds lean toward the Ecuadorian side. Home field at Casa Blanca has been a fortress, and on top of that there's the composure Alvarez's team tends to show in these kinds of decisive moments. Still, there's work to be done: the defense had lapses in Brazil that could have cost another goal, and those are exactly the kind of mistakes that can't be repeated when a knockout series is on the line.
Estrada, beyond an uneven night in front of goal, continues to show good form when it comes to scoring, and that becomes key for a team that will need to come out with determination from the opening whistle in search of a spot in the quarterfinals.
It's worth remembering the recent history: Liga de Quito reached the semifinals in the 2025 edition, and advancing another round is once again part of a bigger goal, that of moving closer to a spot in the 2029 Club World Cup. The return leg will be played next Thursday at Rodrigo Paz Delgado, with Liga de Quito hosting Mirassol with the advantage of not having lost in the first leg and with home field on their side.
